How to Train Your Dragon 2

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a 2014 animated fantasy adventure produced by DreamWorks Animation and written and directed by Dean DeBlois. It is the second film in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, following the 2010 film, and it continues the story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, voiced by Jay Baruchel. Set five years after Hiccup and the Viking village of Berk made peace with dragons, the film finds Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, exploring unmapped territory beyond their island. During one flight, Hiccup and his friend Astrid, voiced by America Ferrera, discover a fort made from ice and encounter dragon trappers led by Eret, Son of Eret, voiced by Kit Harington. The trappers work for Drago Bludvist, a warlord who intends to capture dragons and use them to build an army. Hiccup wants to reason with Drago rather than fight him, a position that puts him at odds with his father, Stoick the Vast, the chief of Berk, voiced by Gerard Butler. The expedition also brings Hiccup to Valka, a mysterious dragon rescuer voiced by Cate Blanchett. Valka is revealed to be Hiccup’s mother, whom he believed had died years earlier after being carried away by a dragon. She has spent two decades living among dragons and protecting them in a hidden sanctuary. Her return reunites Hiccup’s family but also exposes the threat posed by Drago’s enormous alpha dragon, the Bewilderbeast. A central conflict involves the dragons’ instinct to obey an alpha. Drago’s Bewilderbeast defeats the sanctuary’s alpha and takes control of its dragons, including Toothless. Under that control, Toothless fatally attacks Stoick while Hiccup tries to protect him. Stoick’s death is one of the trilogy’s most consequential events, changing Hiccup’s role in Berk and leading to his eventual succession as chief. In the climax, Hiccup breaks Toothless free of Drago’s control, and Toothless challenges the Bewilderbeast. Toothless becomes the new alpha after defeating Drago’s dragon, and the freed dragons drive Drago away. Hiccup returns to Berk, accepts responsibility as its new leader, and speaks of protecting the dragons and their home. The film features the returning voices of Craig Ferguson as Gobber, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fishlegs, Jonah Hill as Snotlout, T.J. Miller as Tuffnut, and Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut. John Powell returned to compose the score. How to Train Your Dragon 2 received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
