Samus Aran is the armored bounty hunter at the center of Nintendo's Metroid series, introduced in the 1986 Famicom Disk System and NES game Metroid. The game famously concealed that its silent protagonist was a woman until certain endings, making the reveal part of her history rather than a later retcon. Her backstory, developed across manuals, manga, and later games, says she survived a Space Pirate raid on the Earth colony K-2L, where Ridley killed her parents, Rodney and Virginia Aran. The birdlike Chozo rescued her, infused her with Chozo DNA, and trained her on Zebes, enabling her to use the Power Suit and its modular weapons. In Metroid, Samus infiltrates Zebes for the Galactic Federation, battles Kraid and Ridley, and destroys Mother Brain, the organic supercomputer directing Pirate attempts to weaponize the parasitic Metroids. Metroid II: Return of Samus sends her to SR388, the Metroids' homeworld, to exterminate the species; she spares one hatchling that imprints on her as its mother. That choice drives Super Metroid, where the stolen baby grows to giant size and sacrifices itself to save Samus during the final Mother Brain battle, giving her the Hyper Beam. Metroid Fusion changes her body again: an X parasite infection nearly kills her, doctors remove parts of her suit, and Metroid DNA from the baby saves her life. The same game turns her old Power Suit into the SA-X, an X copy that stalks the Biologic Space Laboratories station. The Metroid Prime games place major missions between Metroid and Metroid II: on Tallon IV, Samus investigates Phazon corruption, defeats Meta Ridley, and faces Metroid Prime. Later Prime entries follow Dark Samus, the Phazon-born entity that imitates and opposes her across Aether and a Federation war. Metroid: Zero Mission retells her first Zebes mission and adds a vulnerable Zero Suit escape sequence, after her Power Suit is destroyed. Metroid: Other M connects her to Adam Malkovich, her former Galactic Federation commanding officer, and explores their Bottle Ship mission after Super Metroid. Metroid Dread resumes the post-Fusion timeline on planet ZDR, where Samus evades E.M.M.I. robots, encounters Chozo soldier Raven Beak, and learns he helped engineer her inherited warrior genes. By Dread's finale, her latent Metroid powers awaken, threatening her identity until Quiet Robe-X stabilizes her. Across these games, Samus is defined by choices: avenging K-2L, sparing the baby, surviving infection, and repeatedly resisting those who exploit Metroids.
