Roronoa Zoro

Roronoa Zoro is a fictional swordsman in Eiichiro Oda’s manga and anime series One Piece. He first appears as a captive of the Marines in Shells Town, where he is known as “Pirate Hunter” Zoro because he previously collected bounties. Monkey D. Luffy frees him after confronting Captain Morgan, and Zoro becomes the first crewmate to join the Straw Hat Pirates. His central ambition is to become the world’s greatest swordsman, a promise he made to his childhood friend and rival, Kuina. Zoro trained at a dojo in Shimotsuki Village under Koushirou. Kuina was the only person he could not defeat, and after her death in an accident, Zoro inherited her sword, Wado Ichimonji. He carries that blade throughout the story and uses it in his distinctive three-sword style, Santoryu. In combat, he grips one sword in each hand and a third in his mouth. His other famous swords include Sandai Kitetsu, a cursed blade he wins by testing its fate against his arm in Loguetown, and Enma, the sword once wielded by Kozuki Oden. At Baratie, Zoro challenges Dracule Mihawk, the current greatest swordsman in the world. Mihawk easily defeats him with a tiny dagger before cutting him with Yoru, his black blade. Rather than retreat, Zoro exposes his chest and vows never to lose again. This defeat reinforces his goal and establishes Mihawk as the opponent he must eventually surpass. During the two-year separation before the New World voyage, Zoro trains under Mihawk. Zoro’s loyalty to Luffy is repeatedly crucial. On Thriller Bark, Bartholomew Kuma offers to spare the crew if someone accepts Luffy’s accumulated pain and injuries. Zoro takes the burden alone, survives, and later tells Sanji that “nothing happened.” At Sabaody Archipelago, Kuma separates the Straw Hats, sending Zoro to Kuraigana Island, where Mihawk lives. He fights many major opponents, including Daz Bonez in Alabasta, Kaku of CP9 at Enies Lobby, Ryuma on Thriller Bark, Pica in Dressrosa, and King of the Beasts Pirates in Wano. In Wano, Zoro helps defeat Kaido’s forces and awakens the ability to coat his attacks with Conqueror’s Haki. He defeats King while learning to control Enma’s demand for Haki. Zoro is also known for an extremely poor sense of direction, a recurring comic trait that often leaves him lost even when traveling with companions.
