Liko

Liko is one of the two central protagonists of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, the animated Pokémon story that began airing in Japan in April 2023. Unlike Ash Ketchum, she does not begin as a traveling champion; she is a quiet student who attends Indigo Academy in the Kanto region. Her partner Pokémon is Sprigatito, a Grass-type Pokémon whose attachment to Liko develops gradually rather than appearing as an instantly mastered partnership. Her life changes after she receives a mysterious pendant from her grandmother, Diana. The object is connected to an ancient pendant described in the series opening arc and makes Liko a target of the Explorers, a group pursuing her and the pendant. During the attack at Indigo Academy, she is rescued by Friede and Captain Pikachu, whose airship crew later becomes her traveling home. That crew is called the Rising Volt Tacklers. Its members include Orla, a mechanic; Murdock, a cook; Mollie, a healer; Ludlow, an experienced fisherman; and Dot, a technology-minded girl who operates online as Nidothing. Their ship, the Brave Olivine, carries Liko, Roy, and their Pokémon while the group investigates the pendant and the larger mystery surrounding ancient Pokémon. Roy is Liko's fellow protagonist and an energetic contrast to her reserved personality. He owns a mysterious ancient Poké Ball and joins the airship crew after meeting her. Their goals intersect when the ball, Liko's pendant, and the story of Lucius, an adventurer from the past, reveal a shared connection. The six Pokémon associated with Lucius are central to that investigation. Liko eventually learns that her pendant contains or awakens Terapagos, a Legendary Pokémon linked to the ancient explorer's journey. Rather than simply searching for a trophy, she is drawn into protecting Terapagos and understanding why the Explorers want it. Her development is shown through battles as well as travel. Sprigatito initially struggles to follow commands, and Liko must learn to communicate with it instead of treating battle instructions as a substitute for trust. She later confronts opponents connected to the Explorers, including Amethio, while Friede's experience gives the young trainers a model for responsible decision-making. Liko has become willing to make tactical choices and accept help. Her relationship with Sprigatito also progresses. Liko's importance therefore comes from her role: she is the pendant's guardian, Terapagos's protector, and one of the people rebuilding Lucius's journey through the ongoing search for answers about the ancient explorer and his companions.
