Eleven, later known as Jane Hopper, is a character in Netflix’s Stranger Things, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown. She first appears in the series’ 1983 storyline after escaping Hawkins National Laboratory, where Dr. Martin Brenner subjected her to experiments intended to develop psychic abilities. Her mother, Terry Ives, had participated in the CIA-linked MKUltra program while pregnant and unsuccessfully tried to recover her daughter. At the laboratory, Eleven is identified by the number tattooed on her forearm, 011. She can move objects, enter locations through a sensory-deprivation state, and communicate psychically, but her exertions often cause nosebleeds and exhaustion. In the woods, Eleven encounters Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair as they search for their missing friend, Will Byers. Mike shelters her in his basement and gives her the name Eleven. She helps locate Will in the Upside Down, a hostile parallel dimension, and identifies the creature pursuing him as the Demogorgon. The season reveals that she had contacted the Demogorgon during a laboratory experiment, opening a gate between dimensions. In the school confrontation, Eleven destroys the Demogorgon with her powers and vanishes. She survives, however, spending time alone before Police Chief Jim Hopper finds and protects her. Hopper becomes Eleven’s adoptive father and she takes the name Jane Hopper. In 1984, she discovers that a former test subject, Kali Prasad, also called Eight, can create illusions. Eleven leaves Kali’s group after refusing to embrace revenge as a purpose. Returning to Hawkins, she uses her abilities to close the gate beneath the laboratory, cutting off the Mind Flayer’s access to the town. In 1985, she joins Mike and their friends against the Mind Flayer’s form at Starcourt Mall. Afterward, she loses her powers while Hopper is presumed dead following the destruction of the Soviet machine reopening the gate. Season four places Eleven in California and then at a Nevada facility, where Dr. Sam Owens and Brenner use NINA project to restore her powers. Through memories, she learns that orderly Peter Ballard was Henry Creel, One, the laboratory’s first subject. In 1979, Henry manipulated Eleven into removing a device that suppressed him, murdered the children and staff. Eleven overpowered him and banished him into another dimension, where he became Vecna. Back in 1986, she enters Max Mayfield’s mind from a pizza-dough freezer and fights Vecna remotely. Although Max is revived, Vecna’s attack tears open Hawkins and endangers the town.
