The Apothecary Diaries

The Apothecary Diaries is a historical mystery anime adapted from Natsu Hyuga’s light novels, with illustrations by Touko Shino. The television series premiered in October 2023 and was produced by TOHO animation and OLM. Norihiro Naganuma directed the first season and supervised its series composition, while Yukiko Nakatani designed the characters. Its story follows Maomao, a young woman with practical knowledge of medicine, poisons, cosmetics, and pharmacology.

Maomao begins the series after being kidnapped and sold into service at the imperial palace. Rather than revealing her abilities, she tries to remain unnoticed as a palace servant. Her plans change when the emperor’s children become seriously ill. Maomao recognizes that their illness is connected to toxic face powder used by their mothers, and her discreet intervention attracts the attention of Jinshi, an influential palace official known for his extraordinary beauty. Jinshi subsequently assigns Maomao to work as a food taster and investigator.

The anime’s mysteries are rooted in specific medical and social problems rather than supernatural explanations. Maomao examines symptoms, ingredients, scents, medicine, childbirth, poisons, and the dangerous cosmetic practices used by court women. Several cases also expose the palace’s rigid hierarchy, where information is restricted and servants, consorts, eunuchs, and officials must navigate rules that can make an innocent mistake fatal. Maomao’s knowledge is valuable, but her low social position forces her to solve problems indirectly.

The imperial setting is fictional, although the architecture, clothing, bureaucracy, and court customs draw heavily from historical China. The series does not present Maomao as a conventional heroic fighter. Her strongest tools are observation, experimentation, skepticism, and an unusually calm response to physical danger. She is especially interested in poisons, sometimes to the alarm of people around her, and her detached manner often contrasts with the emotional tensions surrounding the palace.

The first season contains twenty-four episodes and follows Maomao’s increasing involvement in court affairs, including investigations involving the rear palace, illness, pregnancy, military history, and Jinshi’s concealed identity. Ryokuoushoku Shakai performed the opening theme, “Hana ni Natte,” while AiNA THE END performed the ending theme, “Aikotoba.” A second television season began broadcasting in January 2025, continuing Maomao’s investigations and her complicated relationship with Jinshi. Through its detailed cases and carefully developed court politics, The Apothecary Diaries combines medical reasoning with character drama while keeping Maomao’s expertise central to every major revelation.
