Yellowstone

Yellowstone is an American neo-Western drama created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. It premiered on the Paramount Network on June 20, 2018, and centers on the Dutton family, whose Yellowstone Dutton Ranch borders a Native American reservation, a growing town, and developers seeking valuable Montana land. The ranch is fictional, but the series uses recognizable conflicts involving land ownership, political power, conservation, and the economic pressure facing working ranches.

Kevin Costner stars in the first four and a half seasons as John Dutton, the ranch’s often ruthless patriarch and Montana’s governor for part of the story. John is determined to keep the property intact, even when protecting it requires political manipulation, violence, or compromises with his children. His daughter Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, is a fiercely intelligent financier whose loyalty to her father is shaped by a traumatic family history. Jamie Dutton, portrayed by Wes Bentley, is an ambitious lawyer whose relationship with the family deteriorates as questions about his birth and loyalty emerge. Luke Grimes plays Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL whose marriage to Monica, a member of the Broken Rock community, places him between his family and his wife’s people.

The ranch’s foreman, Rip Wheeler, played by Cole Hauser, is one of the show’s central figures. Rip was taken in by John as a teenager and becomes the ranch’s most dependable enforcer, while his relationship with Beth develops into one of the series’ major emotional storylines. Gil Birmingham plays Thomas Rainwater, chairman of the fictional Broken Rock Indian Reservation, who seeks to recover land and strengthen his community’s sovereignty. Corporate developer Caroline Warner, portrayed by Jacki Weaver, represents Market Equities, the company attempting to transform the valley through construction and investment.

Yellowstone was filmed partly in Montana, including locations around the Bitterroot Valley, after its early production in Utah. Its popularity led Sheridan to create connected historical series: 1883 follows James and Margaret Dutton’s journey west and the family’s arrival in Montana, while 1923 depicts another generation during Prohibition and the Great Depression. The franchise also includes the contemporary spin-off 6666, connected to the real Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. Yellowstone’s fifth season was divided into two parts. Costner’s departure from the series was announced before the second part, which continued without John Dutton and premiered in November 2024. Despite its melodrama, the show’s identity remains tied to the Duttons’ struggle to preserve a specific ranch against modern development.
