The Savant

The Savant is an Apple TV+ eight-episode limited thriller starring Jessica Chastain as Jodi Goodwin, a top-secret undercover investigator known by her alias, “the Savant.” Her mission is to infiltrate online hate groups, track violent extremists, and help prevent domestic terrorist attacks before they happen in the United States.

Apple announced the project in March 2023, naming Melissa James Gibson as writer and showrunner and Matthew Heineman as director. Gibson previously worked on Anatomy of a Scandal, House of Cards, and The Americans. Heineman, known for documentaries such as Cartel Land and A Private War, also serves as an executive producer.

The story is inspired by a real article published in Cosmopolitan, titled “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” The original article profiled an undercover investigator whose identity was not publicly disclosed. The television adaptation fictionalizes the central character while retaining the basic focus on online radicalization, extremist networks, and efforts to identify threats before violence occurs.

Chastain is also an executive producer through her company, Freckle Films. The production involves Fifth Season and Anonymous Content, with executive producers including Kelly Carmichael, Alan Poul, Gibson, Heineman, David Levine, and Garrett Kemble. Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Jessica Giles and original feature writer Andrea Stanley were also connected to the project.

The announced cast includes Nnamdi Asomugha as Charlie Goodwin, Jodi’s husband; Cole Doman as Steve Dunicki; Jordana Spiro as Amber; Trinity Lee Shirley as Maeve Goodwin; and Toussaint Francois Battiste as Ryan Goodwin. Pablo Schreiber appears as Jason, while additional reported cast members include Dagmara Domińczyk, James Badge Dale, Michael Mosley, Hannah Gross, and David Wilson Barnes.

Apple originally planned to release The Savant globally on September 26, 2025. The first two episodes were scheduled to arrive together, followed by weekly episodes through November 7. On September 23, 2025, three days before the planned premiere, Apple postponed the series without announcing a new date. The decision followed the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, an event that made the show’s subject matter particularly sensitive.

Chastain later said she disagreed with the postponement but remained hopeful that audiences would eventually see the series. Apple’s official press materials currently describe The Savant as “coming soon,” while continuing to present its premise, cast, and trailer. The series therefore remains notable not only for its subject but also for its unusual release history: it is a completed, heavily promoted thriller that was removed from the schedule immediately before its debut.
