The Muppet Show

The Muppet Show was a variety-comedy television series created by Jim Henson and produced in the United Kingdom after American networks had declined Henson’s proposed puppet-based variety program. It premiered on Britain’s ITV network on September 5, 1976, and was syndicated in the United States later that month. The program ran for five seasons and 120 episodes, concluding in 1981. Its productions were made at ATV Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, England, under an arrangement involving Lew Grade’s Associated Television.

Set in a theatrical venue called the Muppet Theatre, each episode combined a guest-star appearance with sketches, songs, backstage arguments, and deliberately chaotic stage productions. Kermit the Frog, performed by Henson, served as the anxious host and manager, attempting to keep the show running while coping with interruptions from performers, critics, and technical disasters. The opening sequence placed the Muppet cast in ornate arches, singing the familiar theme before Kermit announced the week’s guest.

The core ensemble included Miss Piggy, the glamorous and temperamental pig performed primarily by Frank Oz; Fozzie Bear, Kermit’s joke-telling but frequently unsuccessful friend; Gonzo, a blue, long-nosed daredevil known for bizarre acts; Rowlf the Dog, Henson’s piano-playing character; and Scooter, the theatre’s young gofer. Statler and Waldorf, two elderly balcony patrons, punctuated episodes with heckling jokes. The Swedish Chef spoke a comic pseudo-Swedish language while causing culinary havoc, and Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem functioned as the house band. Their members included Animal, the wild drummer, as well as Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot, and Dr. Teeth.

The series’ guest list mixed actors, musicians, comedians, and athletes. Notable visitors included Elton John, Julie Andrews, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Alice Cooper, Mark Hamill, Liza Minnelli, Gene Kelly, and Vincent Price. Guests generally performed within the Muppets’ comic world rather than merely introducing their own work. Alice Cooper, for example, appeared in a Halloween-themed episode, while Peter Sellers performed as several characters, including a Swedish Chef-like cook.

Music was central to the format. The show featured established songs, original numbers, and recurring pieces such as “Mah Nà Mah Nà,” performed by Mahna Mahna and the Snowths. “The Muppet Show Theme” was written by Henson and Sam Pottle. Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher wrote “The Rainbow Connection,” but it was introduced later in The Muppet Movie, not on the television series.

Henson performed Kermit, Rowlf, and several other characters, while Oz performed Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Animal, and Sam Eagle. Richard Hunt, Dave Goelz, Jerry Nelson, and later performers also supplied major characters. The series won multiple Emmy Awards and established the Muppets as international television stars.
