Pride and Prejudice

The 1995 BBC television serial Pride and Prejudice adapts Jane Austen’s 1813 novel across six episodes, directed by Simon Langton and written by Andrew Davies. It stars Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as Fitzwilliam Darcy, with Alison Steadman as Mrs Bennet, Benjamin Whitrow as Mr Bennet, and Susannah Harker as Jane Bennet. Produced by Sue Birtwistle for the BBC, it first aired in the United Kingdom from 24 September to 29 October 1995. It became a major ratings success and remains one of the best-known screen versions of Austen’s story for audiences around the world today.

The plot begins at Longbourn, where the Bennet family’s five unmarried daughters face the social and financial pressure of securing advantageous marriages. When wealthy Charles Bingley rents Netherfield Park, his friend Darcy encounters Elizabeth at a local assembly. Their mutual attraction develops alongside sharp misunderstandings: Elizabeth believes Darcy is proud and responsible for separating Bingley from Jane, while the charming militia officer George Wickham gives her a false account of Darcy’s conduct. The series follows Elizabeth’s changing judgment through visits to Netherfield, Rosings Park, and Pemberley, as revelations expose Wickham’s debts and threatened elopement with Lydia Bennet and alter destinies.

One of the production’s most discussed moments is Darcy’s first proposal to Elizabeth at Hunsford Parsonage. Instead of presenting an uncomplicated declaration of love, he emphasizes the inferiority of her family and his struggle against social expectations. She rejects him, citing his role in Jane’s unhappiness and Wickham’s treatment. Darcy’s subsequent letter provides the evidence that forces Elizabeth to reassess both men. Colin Firth’s performance, particularly the restrained physicality of Darcy’s embarrassment, helped make the character a defining television role of the decade. Jennifer Ehle won the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 1996 in the role.

The adaptation is also notable for its locations and production choices. Lacock in Wiltshire served as Meryton, while Lyme Park in Cheshire represented Pemberley; Belton House in Lincolnshire was used for Rosings. The famous sequence of Darcy emerging from the lake at Pemberley was created for the serial and does not occur in Austen’s novel. Its popularity produced a tie-in: the BBC published a companion book containing the screenplay, photographs, and background material. By combining period detail with a direct presentation of Austen’s dialogue, the serial made the novel’s class tensions, wit, and romantic reversals accessible to a television audience.
