Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry is an adult animated television series based on Capcom’s long-running video-game franchise. Netflix released its first season, eight episodes, on April 3, 2025. The show was created by Adi Shankar, who had previously produced Netflix’s Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne, and it was animated by South Korean studio Studio Mir. Shankar had announced a Devil May Cry adaptation in 2018; the eventual Netflix series is a separate screen interpretation rather than a direct adaptation of one game. Set in a contemporary United States, the story follows Dante, a demon-hunting mercenary who runs the Devil May Cry agency. Dante becomes embroiled in a crisis after the demon known as the White Rabbit seeks the Force Edge, a sword connected to Dante’s father, the legendary demon knight Sparda. The White Rabbit intends to use the weapon and a planned demonic incursion to break the boundary between the human world and Hell. Dante is pursued and pressured by DARKCOM, a government organization combating demonic threats, while the series builds its conflict around his family history and his estranged twin brother, Vergil. Johnny Yong Bosch voices Dante, taking over the role from game actor Reuben Langdon for this production. Scout Taylor-Compton voices Mary, a young demon hunter who is central to the season’s action and whose character draws on the franchise’s Lady. Hoon Lee voices the White Rabbit, and Robbie Daymond voices Vergil. The English-language cast also includes Chris Coppola as Enzo Ferino, a character associated with Dante’s work, and Kevin Conroy as Vice President William Baines. The season was Conroy’s final television performance, released after his death in 2022. Devil May Cry uses material recognizable from across the games without reproducing their chronology. Dante’s red coat, sword combat, pistols Ebony and Ivory, and irreverent manner are retained, while the Force Edge and the Sparda legacy supply major story stakes. Its opening title sequence is set to “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle),” a song by Limp Bizkit, giving the adaptation a deliberately turn-of-the-millennium musical signal. The soundtrack also includes licensed rock and metal tracks, alongside an original score by Jarome Bell. Netflix renewed Devil May Cry for a second season after the first season’s debut, confirming that the animated adaptation would continue. Season one ends by foregrounding Vergil, positioning Dante’s brother as a concern for the next chapter. The emphasis reflects a franchise relationship, although the show maintains its own continuity and supporting cast.
