The Celebrity Traitors is the BBC’s celebrity edition of The Traitors, the psychological reality competition hosted by Claudia Winkleman. Like the civilian series, it is filmed at Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands and combines social deduction, secret identities and an escalating prize fund. The central question remains simple but difficult: can the Faithful identify the Traitors before the Traitors eliminate them?
The celebrity version was commissioned after the success of the original BBC format, which became one of British television’s most discussed programmes after launching in 2022. Studio Lambert produces the series, with Winkleman returning from the main show. However, celebrity status changes the social dynamics. Contestants arrive with established public reputations, long careers and existing relationships with audiences, but those reputations offer no protection inside the castle. A performer known for comedy may be able to disguise suspicion with humour, while a respected broadcaster or sports star may become an early target because other players assume they can influence the room.
The announced line-up includes figures from entertainment, sport and broadcasting. Among them are comedian Alan Carr, presenter Jonathan Ross, actor and comedian Nick Mohammed, comedian Nish Kumar, singer Charlotte Church, Olympic diver Tom Daley, former rugby player Joe Marler, actor Celia Imrie, broadcaster Kate Garraway and comedian Lucy Beaumont. Their careers span television, film, music, comedy, journalism and elite sport, making the cast markedly different from the ordinary contestants of the parent series.
Each day, the group debates suspicions and votes at the Round Table to banish one player. At night, the hidden Traitors secretly “murder” a contestant, removing that person from the game. The Traitors can also recruit a Faithful under particular circumstances, creating further uncertainty. At the finale, surviving players decide whether to end the game or continue searching. If a Traitor remains, the prize can be taken from the Faithful; if all Traitors are banished, the remaining Faithful share the money.
The programme’s appeal lies in the contrast between familiar faces and unfamiliar behaviour. Viewers may recognise a contestant’s voice, comic persona or public image, yet the format rewards concealment, calculated persuasion and careful reading of group behaviour. Celebrity Traitors therefore extends an established BBC format without abandoning its defining structure: the castle setting, the Round Table, the nightly murders and the constant possibility that trust is being deliberately manufactured.
