Tony Gilroy

Tony Gilroy is an American screenwriter, director, and producer whose work has ranged from legal thrillers and literary adaptations to large-scale espionage and science-fiction franchises. Born in Manhattan on September 11, 1956, he is the son of playwright Frank D. Gilroy, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for The Subject Was Roses. Tony Gilroy’s brother Dan Gilroy is also a screenwriter and director, known for Nightcrawler. Gilroy first gained major screenwriting attention with The Cutting Edge, the 1992 romantic sports film about a disgraced hockey player and a difficult Olympic figure skater forced to become pairs partners. He later wrote the adaptation of Stephen King’s Dolores Claiborne, starring Kathy Bates, and contributed to projects including The Devil’s Advocate and Proof of Life. His most commercially influential work came through the Bourne series. Gilroy co-wrote The Bourne Identity, directed by Doug Liman and starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, an amnesiac operative pursued by the CIA. He wrote the screenplays for The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, both directed by Paul Greengrass. The latter won three Academy Awards, including Best Film Editing, and became one of the defining action-thrillers of the 2000s. Gilroy later directed The Bourne Legacy, a 2012 spinoff starring Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, set alongside the events of The Bourne Ultimatum. Gilroy made his feature directorial debut with Michael Clayton in 2007. The film stars George Clooney as a New York law-firm fixer confronting a corporate cover-up involving a chemical company. Michael Clayton received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for Gilroy. Tilda Swinton won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for playing corporate lawyer Karen Crowder. Gilroy followed it with Duplicity, a 2009 corporate-espionage comedy starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. In the Star Wars franchise, Gilroy was involved in the post-production reshaping of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and received a screenplay credit alongside Chris Weitz. He later created Andor for Disney+, serving as its principal writer and showrunner. Set during the five years before Rogue One, the series follows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor as he moves from reluctant survivor to committed rebel operative. Andor was widely praised for its political detail, prison storyline, and portrayal of the Rebel Alliance’s moral compromises. Gilroy’s writing is particularly associated with institutional power, corporate wrongdoing, intelligence operations, and characters forced to make ethically damaging choices.
