Tappei Nagatsuki

Tappei Nagatsuki is a Japanese novelist best known for Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu). Writing under a pen name, he first posted the story on the user-generated fiction site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in April 2012. The web serialization established the premise that distinguishes the series: Subaru Natsuki, a Japanese teenager transported to a fantasy kingdom, repeatedly returns to an earlier point after dying. Rather than giving Subaru uncomplicated heroic power, “Return by Death” forces him to retain memories of traumatic deaths while those around him reset. MF Bunko J acquired the work, releasing its first printed light novel volume in January 2014, with illustrations by Shinichirou Otsuka. The commercial edition reworked and expanded material from the web novel, and Nagatsuki has continued to publish both versions. The franchise became a major multimedia property, spawning manga adaptations and animated versions. White Fox produced the first television anime season, which aired in 2016. Its 25-episode run brought Subaru, silver-haired half-elf royal candidate Emilia, and the maid Rem to a wider audience, while emphasizing the narrative’s loop-based structure and psychological cost. A second television season aired in 2020–2021, adapting later arcs involving the Sanctuary and the Witch of Greed, Echidna. Nagatsuki also worked in anime beyond Re:Zero. He served as original creator and series composer on Warlords of Sigrdrifa, A-1 Pictures’ 2020 television series about Valkyrie pilots fighting extraterrestrial threats with Norse mythology framing its conflict. He also conceived Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-, the 2021 original television anime made by Wit Studio. For Vivy, he shared original-story and series-composition credits with Eiji Umehara. Re:Zero’s story begins when Subaru leaves a convenience store and finds himself in Lugunica. His first attempt to aid Emilia ends with both murdered by Elsa Granhiert, the Bowel Hunter; the resulting reset introduces the series’ governing mechanism. Later volumes place Subaru amid the royal selection, the Witch Cult, and political disputes among Lugunica’s factions. This combination of serialized web fiction, printed light novels, and its adaptations made Nagatsuki one of the central creative figures behind the property. Born on March 11, 1987, Nagatsuki remains identified publicly primarily by his pen name. His Re:Zero novels use recurring alternate timelines not simply as action devices, but to revisit character choices and consequences. The work’s long serialization has allowed its cast, including Beatrice, Otto, and Reinhard van Astrea, to gain major roles over time.
