Roy Frank “RJ” Mitte III was born on August 21, 1992, in Lafayette, Louisiana, and was adopted shortly after birth. He grew up in Texas, where he began acting after moving with his family to Los Angeles. Mitte has cerebral palsy, a neurological condition affecting movement, and his experience with the disability became an important part of his public work and screen career.

Mitte became internationally known as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in the AMC crime drama Breaking Bad. The series, created by Vince Gilligan, follows chemistry teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, after he begins producing methamphetamine with former student Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul. Mitte’s character is Walter’s teenage son, who uses crutches because of cerebral palsy. The role ran from 2008 through 2013 and placed Mitte within one of television’s most acclaimed ensemble casts. Although the character’s condition reflected Mitte’s own diagnosis, Mitte has explained that he had to exaggerate his physical symptoms for the role because his cerebral palsy is milder than Flynn’s.

His performance on Breaking Bad helped make him a prominent disability advocate. Mitte has spoken publicly about accessibility, discrimination, and the shortage of authentic disability representation in entertainment. In 2013, he became a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy, an organization supporting people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. He has also discussed how disabled actors are often excluded from roles or treated as inspirational symbols instead of being allowed to portray complex characters.

After Breaking Bad, Mitte appeared in several film and television projects. His credits include the independent film Who’s Driving Doug, the science-fiction thriller Time Share, and appearances in series such as Switched at Birth and Now Apocalypse. He also worked as a presenter and participated in entertainment and fashion projects, including modeling. In 2016, he served as a presenter at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, connecting his media profile with disability-focused international sport.

Mitte’s career is closely associated with the shift toward more visible disability representation in popular media. His work does not make Breaking Bad a documentary about cerebral palsy; Flynn White is a fictional character within a family and crime narrative. However, Mitte’s presence brought a performer with lived experience of disability into a major dramatic television production, while his advocacy has continued beyond the show. He remains best known for portraying Flynn and for using that visibility to discuss inclusion, employment opportunities, and representation for disabled people.
