Kim Seong-hun

Kim Seong-hun is a South Korean film and television director whose work has repeatedly turned survival crises into tightly constructed genre stories. His first feature as director was the 2006 comedy *How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men*, starring Baek Yoon-sik and Bong Tae-gyu. He later became widely known through *A Hard Day* (2014), a blackly comic crime thriller built around a police detective’s disastrous attempt to conceal a fatal accident.

In *A Hard Day*, Lee Sun-kyun plays Go Geon-su, a detective driving to his mother’s funeral while facing an internal-affairs investigation. After he strikes a man with his car, Geon-su hides the body in his mother’s coffin, only to learn that another figure knows what he has done. Cho Jin-woong plays Park Chang-min, the threatening antagonist who turns the cover-up into an escalating contest. The film premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Its compact premise, reversals, and collision of suspense with grim humour brought Kim substantial international attention; the film was subsequently remade in several countries, including China, France, Japan, and the Philippines.

Kim followed it with *Tunnel* (2016), starring Ha Jung-woo as Lee Jung-su, an ordinary car salesman trapped after a poorly built highway tunnel collapses. Bae Doona plays the emergency-services official leading efforts to reach him, while Oh Dal-su appears as a fellow survivor. Rather than treating the disaster solely as an action spectacle, the film also examines the pressures created by public attention, political calculation, media coverage, and the financial arguments surrounding a prolonged rescue.

For Netflix, Kim directed the first season of *Kingdom*, the Korean historical-horror series written by Kim Eun-hee. Set in the Joseon period, it joins palace intrigue to a zombie outbreak: Crown Prince Lee Chang investigates a strange illness connected to his father, the king, while a famine-ravaged population becomes vulnerable to infection. Ju Ji-hoon stars as the prince, with Ryu Seung-ryong as Cho Hak-ju and Bae Doona as physician Seo-bi. The series was Netflix’s first original Korean series and helped demonstrate the global reach of Korean serial drama.

Kim returned to feature filmmaking with *Ransomed* (2023), again starring Ha Jung-woo, alongside Ju Ji-hoon. Set in 1986 Beirut, it follows a South Korean diplomat sent to recover a colleague who was abducted in Lebanon. Across crime, disaster, period horror, and geopolitical thrillers, Kim places characters under practical pressure, while institutional failures heighten danger at every turn.
