Karyn Kusama is an American filmmaker whose feature debut, *Girlfight* (2000), introduced Michelle Rodriguez as Diana Guzman, a Brooklyn teenager determined to become a boxer. Kusama wrote and directed the film, building its story around Diana’s training, her conflict with her father, and her refusal to accept the expectations placed on her as a young woman. *Girlfight* won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, where Kusama also received the directing award.
Her next feature took her into studio science fiction. *Æon Flux* (2005) starred Charlize Theron as an assassin in a futuristic society and adapted the animated series created by Peter Chung. Kusama then directed *Jennifer’s Body* (2009), written by Diablo Cody. Megan Fox plays Jennifer, a high-school student who becomes a threat to the boys around her after a rock band attempts to sacrifice her. Amanda Seyfried plays Needy, Jennifer’s best friend, whose understanding of what happened drives the film’s confrontation. Though its initial reception was mixed, the film later attracted renewed attention for its treatment of friendship, exploitation, and adolescent sexuality.
Kusama returned to a smaller scale with *The Invitation*, which premiered in 2015. Its story unfolds largely during a dinner party hosted by Eden and her new husband, David. Eden’s former husband, Will, arrives carrying grief over the death of their son and grows suspicious of the hosts’ intentions. Rather than immediately confirming or dismissing his fears, the film makes the guests’ uneasy conversations central to its suspense. Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi wrote the screenplay; Hay is Kusama’s husband and a recurring collaborator.
Their collaboration continued with *Destroyer* (2018), also written by Hay and Manfredi. Nicole Kidman plays Erin Bell, a Los Angeles detective drawn back into the consequences of a disastrous undercover assignment. The film moves between Erin’s present-day investigation and the earlier operation, gradually revealing why she remains fixated on the gang she infiltrated.
Kusama also directed “Her Only Living Son,” a segment of the 2017 horror anthology *XX*, about a mother confronting disturbing changes in her teenage son. Her television work includes directing the pilot of *Yellowjackets*, which premiered in 2021. Across these projects, her films have moved from a boxing gym to science-fiction action, supernatural horror, a fraught dinner party, and a detective’s investigation—settings tied to distinct characters and stories rather than a single genre.
