Kang Full

Kang Full, the pen name of South Korean cartoonist Kang Do-young, is a major figure in the development of the Korean webtoon. He began publishing comics online in 2002, when Internet serialization was still far less established than it later became through portal platforms. His early online work Love Story helped make his name, and his use of vertically arranged panels was suited to reading by scrolling on a computer screen. Rather than treating the Web merely as a place to repost print comics, Kang Full made its screen format part of the storytelling rhythm, controlling pauses, reveals, and changes of perspective through the reader’s downward movement. His bibliography is notable for moving between romance, suspense, horror, and social drama while retaining an interest in ordinary neighborhoods and the emotional consequences of violence. Apartment, serialized in 2004, centers on deaths connected to a high-rise apartment complex and was adapted as the 2006 film Apartment. Timing, a 2005 webtoon, follows people whose supernatural abilities are tied to time. Kang Full returned to superpowered characters in his 2015 webtoon Moving, which became Disney+’s 2023 series Moving. The television adaptation, directed by Park In-je and released in episodes on Disney+, brought Kang’s work to a large international streaming audience. Several of his stories reached film audiences before the streaming era. Hello, Schoolgirl, based on his webtoon of the same name, was released in 2008; it is a romantic story involving two couples with substantial age differences. His 2006 work 26 Years imagines an attempt to assassinate a fictional former president held responsible for the 1980 Gwangju massacre. The comic’s politically charged premise was adapted into the 2012 film 26 Years. These adaptations matter because they demonstrate that Kang Full was not simply an Internet cartoonist: his serial narratives supplied recognizable properties for Korean cinema and, later, television. His work has a publication history in Korea’s portal-comics culture: readers encountered installments online, then titles appeared in collected print editions and were licensed for adaptation. Kang Full’s prominence therefore rests on identifiable works rather than a reputation for web comics. Apartment established his talent for unease; 26 Years placed fictional characters in dialogue with a traumatic event in modern Korean history; and Moving converted a webtoon premise into a high-profile television production.
