Jung Woo-sung

Jung Woo-sung (born March 20, 1973) is a South Korean actor, filmmaker, and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. He entered cinema in Koo Im-seo's 1994 fantasy film The Fox with Nine Tails, then became widely known through Kim Sung-su's Beat (1997). In that youth drama, he played Min, a rebellious high-school dropout pulled into gang life; the film established the lanky, intense screen presence that became central to his star image. He rejoined Kim for City of the Rising Sun (1999), a Seoul-set crime drama in which he portrayed Do-chul, a small-time criminal caught in a web of friendship and severe violence.

Jung broadened that image with romance and melodrama. In A Moment to Remember (2004), directed by John H. Lee, he played Choi Chul-soo, an architect whose marriage is tested when his wife, Su-jin, develops early-onset Alzheimer's disease. The film, co-starring Son Ye-jin, became especially popular in Japan and remains one of the best-known Korean melodramas of its period. His later films include Musa: The Warrior (2001), Kim Sung-su's historical adventure set during the Ming dynasty; The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008), Kim Jee-woon's Manchurian western; and Cold Eyes (2013), where he played a surveillance-unit chief hunting a criminal organization.

In 2019, Jung won the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor in Film for Innocent Witness. Directed by Lee Han, the courtroom drama casts him as Soon-ho, a defense lawyer representing a murder suspect. The key witness, Ji-woo, is a teenage girl with autism; the film follows Soon-ho's effort to communicate with her without treating her testimony as a simple legal obstacle. He later headlined Hunt (2022), Lee Jung-jae's directorial debut, as intelligence agent Kim Jung-do opposite Lee Jung-jae's Park Pyong-ho. That espionage thriller is set against the political tensions of the 1980s and was invited to Cannes' Midnight Screenings.

Beyond acting, Jung has taken public roles connected to displaced people. UNHCR named him a National Goodwill Ambassador in 2014, and he has visited refugee communities and spoken about protection and durable solutions. In 2022, he made his feature directing debut with A Man of Reason, also starring as Su-hyuk, a former criminal released from prison after ten years. Its story follows his attempt to leave his gang and build a life with his young daughter, while former associates pursue him. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and was later released theatrically in South Korea.
