Glória Menezes, born Nilcedes Soares Magalhães on 19 October 1934 in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, is one of the defining actresses of Brazilian television drama. Her professional name became nationally familiar through telenovelas, especially in productions that helped establish the daily serial as a major form of popular entertainment in Brazil. In 1963, she and Tarcísio Meira starred in TV Excelsior's 2-5499 Ocupado, widely identified as the first Brazilian telenovela shown in daily installments. Their partnership on screen quickly became a landmark of the medium. Menezes and Meira married in 1962 and remained together until his death in 2021. They had one son, actor Tarcísio Filho, born in 1964. Over several decades, the couple repeatedly worked together in television, theater, and film, becoming one of Brazil's most recognized artistic partnerships. Their public life was closely associated with the history of television itself, from the expansion of the networks in the 1960s to the large-scale productions of Rede Globo. At Globo, Glória Menezes appeared in important serials written by leading Brazilian dramatists. She was in Sangue e Areia, a 1967 adaptation connected to the novel by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, and played Lara in Janete Clair's Irmãos Coragem in 1970. The latter was an enormous success and is frequently cited among the most influential Brazilian telenovelas. Her Globo work also included O Semideus, Escalada, Espelho Mágico, Pai Herói, Ciranda de Pedra, Guerra dos Sexos, and Partido Alto, placing her in productions by authors such as Janete Clair and Lauro César Muniz. Her later television career showed her ability to remain active across changing generations of performers and audiences. She appeared in A Próxima Vítima, Torre de Babel, Senhora do Destino, and A Favorita. In A Favorita, written by João Emanuel Carneiro and broadcast in 2008, she played Irene Fontini, part of the large ensemble surrounding the rivalry between the central characters Flora and Donatela. She also worked in series and miniseries, rather than limiting her career to telenovelas. In August 2021, Menezes and Tarcísio Meira were hospitalized with COVID-19. Menezes recovered and was discharged, while Meira died on 12 August 2021, aged 85. Her career remains inseparable from the consolidation of Brazilian television drama: she participated in its early daily-serial period, worked in several canonical Globo productions, and sustained a public artistic partnership with Tarcísio Meira for almost six decades.
