Giorgian de Arrascaeta

Giorgian Daniel de Arrascaeta Benedetti was born on 1 June 1994 in Nuevo Berlin, a town in Uruguay's Rio Negro Department. He developed at Defensor Sporting, one of Montevideo's established development clubs, and made his first-team debut in Uruguay's Primera Division during the 2012-13 season. A creative midfielder noted for left-footed passing, close control, and set-piece delivery, he helped Defensor Sporting reach the semifinals of the 2014 Copa Libertadores. That run put him on a larger continental stage and preceded his move to Brazil. In football, he is commonly called De Arrascaeta, though Brazilian coverage often shortens it to Arrascaeta. In 2015, Cruzeiro signed him, bringing the Uruguayan to Belo Horizonte. Across four seasons, he became a regular in a side that won successive Copa do Brasil titles in 2017 and 2018. He also featured in Cruzeiro's Campeonato Mineiro triumphs during that period. In 2019, Flamengo acquired him for a reported record fee for a Brazilian domestic transfer. The move connected him with one of South America's most ambitious squads. Under Jorge Jesus, he was a key creator as Flamengo won the 2019 Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa Libertadores. In the Libertadores final against River Plate in Lima, Flamengo scored twice. Flamengo's 2019 Libertadores victory was their first in the competition since 1981, and De Arrascaeta remained central to the club's subsequent trophy haul. He won further Brazilian league titles in 2020 and 2022, and another Libertadores in 2022. Flamengo also lifted the Copa do Brasil in 2022, with De Arrascaeta contributing during the campaign. His impact is often measured in assists and chances created, but he also scores from midfield, particularly when arriving late around the penalty area. Flamengo's attacking football has frequently used him between midfield and defence, where he can combine with forwards or shoot with his left foot. At international level, De Arrascaeta has represented Uruguay in major tournaments, including the 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2024 Copa America editions, as well as the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. At Qatar 2022, he scored both goals in Uruguay's 2-0 group-stage win over Ghana. The result was insufficient to take Uruguay into the knockout rounds, because the team finished behind South Korea on goals scored. He had previously appeared at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. As a Uruguay international and Flamengo playmaker, De Arrascaeta's career links Uruguay's development system with success in Brazilian and South American football.
