Francis Galluppi is an American filmmaker whose feature directorial debut, *The Last Stop in Yuma County*, brought him wider attention. Galluppi wrote, directed, and edited the crime thriller. It premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023 and was released in the United States in 2024. Rather than following a police investigation or a robbery in progress, the film concentrates on what happens when the people behind a bank robbery stop at an isolated diner where nobody can leave easily.
The story begins with a traveling knife salesman, played by Jim Cummings, waiting at a gas station in Arizona. Its pumps are empty, and the next fuel delivery has not arrived. Across the road, he waits in a diner run by a waitress played by Jocelin Donahue. Two bank robbers, played by Richard Brake and Nicholas Logan, soon arrive with the same problem. As other travelers enter the diner, the robbers’ presence turns an ordinary delay into a dangerous standoff. The confined setting lets Galluppi build tension through conversations, glances, and the changing balance of power among people who were strangers only hours earlier.
The film’s ensemble also includes Michael Abbott Jr., Faizon Love, Sierra McCormick, Alex Essoe, and Barbara Crampton. Its title names a real Arizona county, but the drama depends less on local landmarks than on the practical predicament created by an empty gas station on a remote road. Galluppi uses the knife salesman’s position as an accidental witness to connect the robbers’ plans with the choices facing the waitress and the other customers. The result is a crime story in which small decisions have increasingly severe consequences.
Galluppi’s work on *The Last Stop in Yuma County* also led to a notable opportunity in an established horror franchise. In 2024, reports said he had been chosen to write and direct a new *Evil Dead* film. That announcement concerned a proposed project, not a film already released. The connection was significant: Sam Raimi’s 1981 *The Evil Dead* began a series known for its mix of horror, violence, and dark humor. Galluppi’s debut had likewise demonstrated an interest in sudden violence and bleakly comic situations, though its setting and story were his own. His documented feature-film career at that point centered on a single, self-written thriller, making the proposed *Evil Dead* assignment a substantial step beyond the independent production that introduced him to many viewers.
