Cláudio Taffarel

Cláudio Taffarel, born Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel on 8 May 1966 in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, became one of Brazil’s defining goalkeepers during the country’s return to World Cup success in the 1990s. He began his professional career with Internacional, where he won the 1984 Campeonato Gaúcho and established himself as a promising goalkeeper despite his relatively modest height for the position.

Taffarel was selected for Brazil’s squad at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where Brazil won the silver medal. His international importance grew rapidly. He was Brazil’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, playing in the team’s four matches before Brazil were eliminated by Argentina in the round of 16. He also helped Brazil win the Copa América in 1989, the country’s first title in that competition since 1949, and again in 1997.

After Internacional, Taffarel moved to Italy, playing for Parma from 1990 to 1993. During that period, Parma won the 1991–92 Coppa Italia and the 1992–93 European Cup Winners’ Cup. He later played for Reggiana before returning to Brazil with Atlético Mineiro. His most celebrated club spell came at Galatasaray, where he played between 1998 and 2001. With the Istanbul club, he won two Turkish league titles, the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup, and the 2000 UEFA Super Cup. Galatasaray’s UEFA Cup victory over Arsenal was decided on penalties, reinforcing Taffarel’s reputation for composure in shootouts.

At the 1994 World Cup in the United States, Taffarel was central to Brazil’s fourth world title. In the final against Italy, he saved Daniele Massaro’s penalty in the shootout; Brazil won after Roberto Baggio sent Italy’s final kick over the crossbar. Four years later, Taffarel again played every match as Brazil reached the 1998 World Cup final. In the semifinal against the Netherlands, he saved penalties from Ronald de Boer and Phillip Cocu, sending Brazil to the final.

Taffarel earned 101 caps for Brazil between 1988 and 1998. After retiring as a player, he became a goalkeeper coach, working with Galatasaray, the Brazilian national team, and Liverpool. At Liverpool, he joined Jürgen Klopp’s staff in 2021 and worked with goalkeepers including Alisson Becker. His career is closely associated with Brazil’s 1994 triumph, decisive penalty saves, and Galatasaray’s landmark European success.
