Christophe Beck

Christophe Beck is a Canadian film and television composer whose career has moved from cult television to major studio franchises and animated musicals. Born Jean-Christophe Beck in Montreal, Quebec, in 1972, he studied music at Yale University before pursuing screen composition. His earliest prominent professional work came through television, including collaboration with producer-composer Mike Post, but he became especially associated with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. For the series, Beck wrote dramatic underscore rather than its Nerf Herder theme; his music helped define episodes ranging from horror to romance and tragedy.

In 1998, Beck won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore) for Buffy’s two-part second-season finale, “Becoming, Part One.” He continued scoring the program and subsequently brought that television experience to features. His early film credits include Bring It On (2000), a cheerleading comedy whose percussion-heavy score supported its competitive routines, and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003).

Beck became a frequent composer for broad studio comedy, scoring films such as The Hangover (2009), its two sequels, Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), The Muppets (2011), and Pitch Perfect (2012). On The Muppets, he provided the orchestral score alongside the songs written by Bret McKenzie; the distinction matters because the film’s musical numbers were not Beck compositions. His work has also extended to action and science fiction, including Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Ant-Man (2015).

For Disney’s Frozen (2013), Beck composed the score beneath songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, using orchestral writing to connect Arendelle’s comic and emotional scenes. He returned for Frozen II (2019), again handling score while the Lopezes supplied songs. This division of labor illustrates how Beck’s career often operates within song-driven films without obscuring the separate role of a dramatic score.

His franchise work also includes Marvel’s Ant-Man and its sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), as well as DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023). Beck scored the 2015 animated feature The Peanuts Movie. His credits show a composer repeatedly hired across sharply different formats: episodic television, live-action comedy, superhero films, animation, and family musicals. Rather than being identified with a single genre, Beck’s work is notable for its range and for the care with which credits distinguish original underscore from songs written by other artists. That clarity is essential to understanding his contribution to productions such as Frozen and The Muppets.
