Chinaka Hodge

Chinaka Hodge is an Oakland-born writer whose work moves between poetry, theatre, television and film, while repeatedly returning to questions of race, state violence, family and the political meaning of home. Her play Chasing Mehserle takes its title from Johannes Mehserle, the Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer who shot and killed Oscar Grant III at Fruitvale station on January 1, 2009. Rather than treating the event as detached history, the play examines its consequences through a fictionalized world shaped by the shooting and its aftermath in Oakland. Hodge’s published poetry includes Dated Emcees, a collection whose title invokes hip-hop culture and romantic memory. Her earlier book The Girls with the Blue Hair also appears in her bibliography. In theatre, her plays include Mirrors in Every Corner and The Walk Across America for Mother Earth. Chasing Mehserle’s framing matters: Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Grant’s death, and the case became a defining flashpoint in Oakland’s debate over policing and accountability. In television, Hodge joined the writing staff of TNT’s Snowpiercer, the series set aboard a perpetually moving train after a climate catastrophe renders Earth frozen. She also wrote for Apple TV+’s revival of Amazing Stories. These credits placed a poet and dramatist inside serialized genre television before her central role in Marvel’s Ironheart. Hodge created Ironheart and served as its head writer. The series centers on Riri Williams, the young inventor played by Dominique Thorne. Riri made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where she builds advanced armor; Ironheart follows her return to Chicago. The show brings Riri into conflict with Parker Robbins, also called the Hood, played by Anthony Ramos and frames its conflict around technology and magic. Marvel announced the project as a six-episode Disney+ series. Hodge received a story credit on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ryan Coogler’s 2022 sequel to Black Panther. The film addresses King T’Challa’s death following the death of Chadwick Boseman, introduces Thorne’s Riri, and places Wakanda in conflict with Talokan, the underwater nation led by Namor. Her story credit links her directly to the film that established the screen version of Ironheart before the character’s own series. Across these forms, Hodge has not treated Oakland as interchangeable backdrop: Chasing Mehserle specifically addresses the Grant killing, while Ironheart makes Chicago Riri Williams’s home. Her credits therefore connect local American cities, speculative settings and a major superhero franchise.
