Atsuko Nakajima

Atsuko Nakajima is a Japanese animator and character designer whose credited work spans television series, original video animation, and theatrical anime. She is particularly known for character-design assignments on manga and game adaptations, including Ranma ½, You’re Under Arrest, GetBackers, and Hakuoki, across several distinct television, film, and video formats. Her name is prominently connected with Studio Deen productions, although her credits also reach beyond that studio. Nakajima’s career is therefore documented not simply through isolated animation episodes, but through recurring design assignments on franchises that continued in multiple formats and seasons. Among her best-known early television work is Rumiko Takahashi’s Ranma ½.

On the 1989 Ranma ½ television adaptation and its continuation, Ranma ½ Nettōhen, Nakajima served as character designer. The premise—martial artist Ranma Saotome changes into a girl after contact with cold water—required consistent designs for transformations, large ensembles, and comedy-driven reactions. Her designs helped establish the animated appearance of Ranma, Akane Tendo, and the series’ supporting cast during the production’s broadcast run. That involvement is important because Ranma ½ did not remain a single short adaptation: the first series, which ran for eighteen episodes, was followed by Nettōhen, which ran for 143 episodes and retained the franchise’s television presence into 1992. Nakajima was also credited for character design on the Ranma ½ theatrical films and original-video projects, extending her visual role beyond weekly television.

Another major Nakajima credit is You’re Under Arrest, adapted from Kōsuke Fujishima’s manga about Tokyo police officers Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa. She was character designer on the 1994 original-video series and the 1996 television series. These productions placed her designs beside motorcycles, cars, uniforms, and police-station settings, while the stories mixed traffic enforcement, workplace comedy, and action. Nakajima designed characters for GetBackers, the 2002 television adaptation centered on Ban Mido and Ginji Amano, two men who recover lost or stolen items for clients. GetBackers ran for forty-nine episodes, making it another television assignment rather than a one-off production. Both titles demonstrate the range of her design work.

Her later credits include character design for the 2010 Hakuoki television series, adapted from Idea Factory’s historical-romance game. Set in late Edo Japan, it follows Chizuru Yukimura’s search for her father and her involvement with the Shinsengumi. Across Ranma ½, You’re Under Arrest, GetBackers, and Hakuoki, Nakajima’s record traces a sustained role in shaping recognizable anime franchise casts over two decades of credited anime productions.
