Alfred Molina

Alfred Molina was born in London on 24 May 1953 to Giovanna, an Italian-born cook and cleaner, and Esteban Molina, a Spanish waiter and chauffeur. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before establishing himself on the British stage. In 1980 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing roles including Troilus in Troilus and Cressida and Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew. His theatre career later brought three Tony Award nominations: for Yasmina Reza's Art in 1998, for Fiddler on the Roof in 2004, and for John Logan's Red in 2010. Molina made his feature-film debut as Satipo, the ill-fated guide who triggers the opening chase in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). He subsequently appeared in Letter to Brezhnev, Prick Up Your Ears, Enchanted April, and Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. His performance as Diego Rivera opposite Salma Hayek in Frida (2002) put the Mexican painter's turbulent marriage to Kahlo at the center of the film. He also played the stern Comte de Reynaud in Chocolat, appeared as Dr. Malick in Identity, and portrayed Bishop Manuel Aringarosa in The Da Vinci Code. His best-known comic-book screen character is Otto Octavius, or Doctor Octopus, in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 (2004). Molina gave the scientist emotional weight as Octavius becomes fused to four mechanical tentacles after a failed fusion experiment; the role was widely revived when he returned as the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). On television, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for playing Robert Aldrich in the 2017 anthology Feud: Bette and Joan. He appeared in HBO's television film The Normal Heart, and in FX's 2022 drama The Old Man. Beyond acting, Molina has narrated audiobooks and performed notable voice work, notably as the Mayor, a desert turtle, in Gore Verbinski's animated film Rango (2011). He became a US citizen in 2004 while retaining British citizenship. Molina married actress Jill Gascoine in 1986 and helped raise her three sons; their marriage lasted until Gascoine's death in 2020. In 2021, he married filmmaker Jennifer Lee, chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Across Shakespeare, Broadway revivals, independent films, prestige television, and franchises, his career has moved fluently between imposing authority figures, historical artists, villains, and vulnerable comic characters. His 2010 performance as painter Mark Rothko in Red, alongside Eddie Redmayne, was directed by Michael Grandage at Broadway's Golden Theatre for its Broadway run.
