Tate McRae is a Canadian singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress from Calgary, Alberta, whose career developed through both competitive dance and online music releases. Born on July 1, 2003, she trained at the School of Alberta Ballet and gained national attention in 2016 as the first Canadian finalist on the American television series “So You Think You Can Dance.” Her dancing also appeared in Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour and the 2016 film “The Next Step.”

McRae began releasing original songs on YouTube through her “Create With Tate” series. Her 2017 song “One Day” attracted substantial attention online, and she signed with RCA Records in 2019. Her five-track debut EP, “All the Things I Never Said,” arrived in January 2020. It included “Tear Myself Apart,” co-written with Billie Eilish and Finneas, and “Stupid,” a song that helped establish McRae’s emotionally direct pop style.

Her international breakthrough came with “You Broke Me First,” released in 2020. The song became a major streaming success and charted in numerous countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. McRae followed it with her debut studio album, “I Used to Think I Could Fly,” released in May 2022. The album explored heartbreak, insecurity, changing friendships, and the pressures of young adulthood. Its track list included “She’s All I Wanna Be,” “What Would You Do?,” and “Chaotic.”

In 2023, McRae entered a larger phase of commercial success with “Greedy,” a dance-pop single inspired in part by the music of the early 2000s. The song became her first number-one single on the Canadian Hot 100 and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It led her second album, “Think Later,” released in December 2023. The album also featured “Exes,” “Run for the Hills,” and “Cut My Hair.”

McRae’s performances combine demanding choreography with confessional songwriting, reflecting the two disciplines that shaped her early career. She has received Juno Award nominations and performed at major international events, while continuing to build a reputation as a contemporary pop performer whose music connects closely to dance-focused visual presentation.
