Phoebe Bridgers is an American singer-songwriter born on August 17, 1994, in Pasadena, California. Raised around Los Angeles, she attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and studied vocal jazz. She began playing shows as a teenager and later performed with the Los Angeles collective Sloppy Jane early. Her debut studio album, Stranger in the Alps, arrived in September 2017. The record included "Motion Sickness," a song whose narrator addresses an older former partner, and "Funeral," written after Bridgers performed for a friend's father following the death of his son. Its production paired intimate vocals with dramatic arrangements. In 2020, her album Punisher was released through Dead Oceans. It featured "Kyoto," "Garden Song," "Chinese Satellite," and "I Know the End." The album's title references a person who falsely claims closeness to a celebrity. Bridgers received four nominations at the 2021 Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, for Punisher. Bridgers formed boygenius with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. The trio released a self-titled EP in 2018, then reconvened for the 2023 album The Record. Its songs included "Not Strong Enough," which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. At the 2024 Grammys, boygenius won Best Alternative Music Album. In 2019, she and Conor Oberst issued an album as Better Oblivion Community Center. Their self-titled record followed a surprise announcement and included "Dylan Thomas." Bridgers also collaborated with the 1975 on "Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America" and appeared on Kid Cudi's "Lovin' Me," both released in 2020 worldwide. Her songwriting frequently uses specific Southern California locations, biblical imagery, and references to films or pop culture. In "Kyoto," she writes from the perspective of touring Japan while processing a difficult relationship with her father. "I Know the End" builds from quiet acoustic verses into a scream and instrumental crescendo. Bridgers has worked with producer Tony Berg, who co-produced Punisher alongside Ethan Gruska. She co-founded the label Saddest Factory Records with Dead Oceans in 2020. The imprint has released music by artists including Claud, MUNA, and Charlie Hickey. She has acted, appearing briefly in the television drama The OA. On February 6, 2021, Bridgers was musical guest on Saturday Night Live. After performing "I Know the End," she smashed her Danelectro guitar during the song's finale. The performance drew attention online. Her cover versions also include "Friday I'm in Love" by the Cure and "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead.
