Montero Lamar Hill, known professionally as Lil Nas X, is an American rapper and singer born on April 9, 1999, in Lithia Springs, Georgia. He developed an interest in music during childhood and began releasing songs independently while still a teenager. In 2018, he uploaded “Old Town Road” to YouTube, where its unconventional structure, memorable beat, and playful video helped it spread rapidly across the internet.

“Old Town Road” was released as a single on December 31, 2018. It combines Lil Nas X’s rapid rapping with an interpolation of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s “34 Ghosts IV,” produced by Nine Inch Nails. Initially, the song was presented primarily as hip-hop. After country radio and Billboard classifications helped fuel its commercial breakthrough, Lil Nas X released a remix with Billy Ray Cyrus in April 2019. The collaboration broadened the song’s audience and turned the playful phrase “Old Town Road” into a major cultural catchphrase.

At the 2020 Grammy Awards, “Old Town Road” won Best Pop Solo Performance, making Lil Nas X the first openly gay man to receive a Grammy in a major category. Its success also challenged the idea that musical genres have rigid boundaries. He later became one of the most recognizable openly LGBTQ artists in mainstream popular music.

His 2021 album “Montero” explored fame, identity, sexuality, family, and pressures surrounding success. Its title track became a major streaming hit, while “Sun to Venus” and “Industry Baby” expanded his sound through electronic pop, house-influenced production, and bright melodic hooks. “Industry Baby,” featuring Jack Harlow, reached number one on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

That same year, Lil Nas X released “Come Home,” a more reflective song about longing and emotional pain. He also developed “Next to Normal,” a musical about bipolar disorder, family relationships, and a young woman struggling to distinguish her own identity from the expectations of her family. The production won major theater awards and received nine Tony Award nominations, including recognition for its book, score, and lead performance.

Through record-breaking streaming, candid songwriting, and ambitious genre-crossing projects, Lil Nas X became a defining figure of modern pop. His career demonstrates how personal honesty, internet culture, experimentation, and strategic collaboration can reshape contemporary music.
