Katy Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, emerged from a religious upbringing to become one of the defining pop stars of the late 2000s and 2010s. Her parents were Pentecostal pastors, and she initially pursued Christian music. In 2001, she released the gospel album Katy Hudson, but the project did not achieve commercial success. After moving toward secular pop, she signed with Capitol Records.
Perry’s breakthrough arrived in 2008 with One of the Boys. Its lead single, “I Kissed a Girl,” topped charts in several countries and introduced her provocative, brightly theatrical style to a worldwide audience. “Hot n Cold,” another major hit from the album, demonstrated her talent for pairing conversational lyrics with instantly memorable choruses.
Her third studio album, Teenage Dream, released in 2010, established an extraordinary commercial run. The album produced five Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” That achievement tied her with Michael Jackson’s record for the most number-one singles from one album. “Firework,” in particular, became associated with messages of self-acceptance and personal confidence.
Perry expanded Teenage Dream with the 2012 reissue Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which included “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.” Her 2013 album Prism adopted a somewhat more reflective tone while retaining her pop accessibility. It featured “Roar,” a global number-one hit, and “Dark Horse,” a collaboration with rapper Juicy J that became one of her most successful singles.
In 2015, Perry headlined the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show. The performance, featuring elaborate staging, dancing sharks, and guest appearances by Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, became one of the event’s most watched halftime performances. She later released Witness in 2017, followed by Smile in 2020. Her catalog also includes the singles “Chained to the Rhythm,” “Never Really Over,” and “Daisies.”
Beyond recording, Perry has worked as a songwriter, voice actor, and television personality. She voiced Smurfette in the animated Smurfs films and served as a judge on American Idol beginning with its 2018 revival. Her career is marked by dramatic visual concepts, elaborate costumes, and a consistent ability to turn personal and cultural themes into widely recognizable pop anthems.
