The Legend of Zelda is an upcoming live-action film adaptation of Nintendo’s video game series, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad and directed by Wes Ball.

The live-action film based on Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda is a real project, but most production details remain undisclosed. Nintendo announced the movie on November 7, 2023, describing it as a live-action adaptation of the long-running game series. Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s representative director and the producer of many Zelda titles, is producing the film with Avi Arad, chairman of Arad Productions and a veteran producer associated with numerous comic-book adaptations.

Wes Ball is attached to direct. Ball is known for directing The Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the 2024 continuation of the Planet of the Apes film series. Derek Connolly is writing the screenplay. Connolly previously wrote Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, and Detective Pikachu, another feature connected to a Nintendo-owned game property. Sony Pictures is handling theatrical distribution worldwide, while Nintendo stated that it will finance more than fifty percent of the production.

The announcement did not identify the film’s cast, title beyond its Zelda association, plot, setting, or relationship to a particular game. No official information has confirmed whether the story will adapt The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, or another installment. Consequently, descriptions of Link, Princess Zelda, Ganon, Hyrule, or the Triforce as confirmed movie elements would go beyond the available production announcement, even though those figures and locations are central to the games.

The project follows Nintendo’s renewed involvement in cinema after The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023 by Illumination and Universal Pictures. That animated film was not a Zelda adaptation and had different producers, distributors, and creative personnel. Nintendo’s Zelda announcement therefore represents a separate production rather than a sequel or shared-universe project.

Nintendo initially scheduled the live-action Zelda movie for March 26, 2027. In February 2025, Miyamoto announced that the release had been postponed to May 7, 2027, stating that the change was made to allow additional time for production. The delay did not reveal further story or casting information.

At present, the verifiable identity of the movie rests on its announced creators, financing and distribution arrangement, and revised release date. Until Nintendo, Sony Pictures, or the filmmakers publish additional details, the adaptation’s narrative, visual style, performers, and interpretation of Zelda’s mythology remain unconfirmed. Its eventual challenge will be translating a game series defined by exploration, puzzle-solving, recurring mythology, and player-directed discovery into a fixed cinematic story without relying on assumptions about the source material.
