Green Lantern is a 2011 American superhero film directed by Martin Campbell and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It adapts DC Comics' Green Lantern mythology, centering on Hal Jordan, a test pilot portrayed by Ryan Reynolds. The screenplay credits Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldenberg. The film also stars Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond, Mark Strong as Sinestro, Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller, and Tim Robbins as Senator Robert Hammond. Its story begins with Abin Sur, a member of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps, suffering a fatal injury after confronting Parallax, an ancient entity that feeds on fear. Before dying, Abin sends his power ring to find a worthy successor on Earth. The ring chooses Hal, who has a reputation for reckless flying and lives with the unresolved legacy of his pilot father Martin Jordan. Hal is taken to Oa, the Corps' headquarters, where he receives training from Tomar-Re and Kilowog and meets Sinestro. Sinestro doubts that a human can master the ring, whose constructs are driven by the wearer's will rather than physical weapons. On Earth, Hector Hammond, a xenobiologist and the senator's son, examines Parallax-contaminated material recovered from Abin Sur's crash site. Exposure enlarges Hammond's intellect but disfigures him and gives him telepathic powers. His resentment toward his father and Hal becomes increasingly violent. Carol, the executive running Ferris Aircraft after her father, remains Hal's longtime friend and romantic interest. She learns his identity when he uses the ring during a confrontation with Hammond. Hal initially abandons his Lantern duties, fearing he is unsuitable, but returns when Parallax approaches Earth. The Guardians of the Universe, who created the Corps, propose using yellow fear energy against Parallax; Sinestro secretly tries it and begins to show the corruption that later defines the character in other Green Lantern stories. Hal instead confronts Parallax with his own will, lures the creature away from Earth, and defeats it by sending it toward the Sun. The film was photographed by Dion Beebe and features a score by James Newton Howard. Digital visual effects supplied the Corps uniforms, rings, and many alien characters, including a computer-generated costume for Reynolds. It was released in the United States on June 17, 2011, after a Los Angeles premiere on June 15. It received largely negative reviews and earned about $220 million worldwide against a reported production budget of roughly $200 million.
