Hunter x Hunter is Yoshihiro Togashi’s adventure manga about Gon Freecss, a boy from Whale Island who becomes a Hunter to find his absent father, Ging Freecss. It began in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in March 1998, after Togashi had already created Yu Yu Hakusho, and its publication became famous not only for popularity but also for long hiatuses caused by the author’s health problems. The premise sounds like a quest story, but the manga quickly becomes a shifting study of exams, crime families, games, politics, and predatory evolution. Gon first enters the Hunter Exam, where he meets Killua Zoldyck, heir to a family of assassins; Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta clan seeking the Phantom Troupe; and Leorio Paradinight, who wants money to become a doctor. Togashi uses that group as a base, then repeatedly separates them. Killua’s escape from Zoldyck family control becomes as central as Gon’s optimism, while Kurapika’s revenge dominates Yorknew City through his chain Nen abilities and his confrontation with Chrollo Lucilfer. The power system, Nen, is one of the series’ most concrete inventions. Characters learn Ten, Zetsu, Ren, and Hatsu, then develop abilities tied to six aura categories: Enhancement, Emission, Manipulation, Transmutation, Conjuration, and Specialization. Because techniques often require restrictions or vows, fights are decided by information, psychology, and conditions, not simply strength. Kurapika’s chains work differently against the Troupe; Hisoka’s Bungee Gum has both rubber and gum properties; and Genthru’s bombs in Greed Island depend on explanation and touch. Major arcs reshape the scale. Greed Island turns Ging’s clues into a Nen-based card game created by Hunters. The Chimera Ant arc begins with a biological threat in the NGL and grows into a tragic conflict around Meruem, Komugi, Chairman Netero, and Gon’s self-destructive transformation. After that, the Chairman Election arc introduces Alluka and Nanika while resolving Gon’s survival. Later chapters move toward the Dark Continent and the Kakin Succession Contest, focusing on princes, bodyguards, Nen beasts, and Kurapika’s exhausting role aboard the Black Whale. Hunter x Hunter has been adapted twice for television: a 1999 Nippon Animation series and a 2011 Madhouse series that ran through the Election material. Its lasting reputation comes from Togashi’s willingness to interrupt shonen expectations: protagonists fail, villains mourn, battles pause for rules, and victory often costs more than it solves for everyone involved in the story’s harsh moral landscape and continuing unresolved voyage beyond known maps.
