Mimikyu

Mimikyu is a Pokémon introduced in Generation VII, first appearing in Pokémon Sun and Moon (2016). Classified as the Disguise Pokémon, it is a dual Ghost- and Fairy-type species. Its Pokédex height is 0.2 meters and its weight is 0.7 kilograms, making it one of the smallest documented Pokémon. Mimikyu’s defining feature is a ragged cloth decorated to resemble Pikachu. A crude face and a bent, lightning-shaped tail are drawn on the fabric, while the Pokémon’s actual body remains hidden beneath it. The design is not merely cosmetic: its identity and behavior are explicitly tied to concealment and imitation alone.

According to Pokédex entries, Mimikyu wears its disguise because it wants to be loved and fears exposure. The cloth is said to be modeled after Pikachu because Pikachu merchandise became popular, leading Mimikyu to copy the species’ appearance. Entries warn that looking at Mimikyu’s true form can cause illness, and some versions describe a violent or fatal consequence. These details create uncertainty: games never show its face under the cloth. In battle, its signature ability, Disguise, lets it take one damaging hit without losing HP, although the disguise breaks; in Generation VIII, that protection inflicts damage.

Mimikyu has an important role in Alola’s story and side content. In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Acerola’s Ghost-type trial takes place at the abandoned Thrifty Megamart on Ula’ula Island. The player investigates paranormal activity and ultimately battles a Totem Mimikyu, whose aura boosts its power and whose allies can include other Ghost Pokémon. In the Ultra games, the encounter remains a notable trial battle, although the surrounding trial details differ. Mimikyu can be obtained and trained by the player, and its Z-Crystal, Mimikium Z, powers the Fairy-type Z-Move Let’s Snuggle Forever when it knows Play Rough.

Outside games, Mimikyu became a recurring character in the Pokémon series during the Sun & Moon era. Team Rocket member Jessie captures one, but it refuses to obey commands and shows a dislike of Pikachu. Its rag hides its face, and the anime uses its unusual movements and hostility to conflict with Ash’s Pikachu. Mimikyu appears in Pokémon merchandise, trading cards, and games including Pokémon Sword and Shield, where Disguise remains central to its battle identity. Its popularity rests on a contradiction: it imitates Pikachu to seek affection, yet the creature, eerie folklore, and broken costume make that imitation unsettling.
