M. Bison is the principal villain of Capcom’s Street Fighter series and the leader of Shadaloo, a criminal organization pursuing military power, illicit weapons, and global domination. He first appeared as the non-playable final opponent in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, released in arcades in 1991. In that game, players encounter him after defeating the other three bosses: Balrog, Vega, and Sagat. Bison fights in a red military uniform and cap, using Psycho Power, a destructive energy associated with his ambition and cruelty.

Bison’s name has an unusual localization history. In the original Japanese version, the boxer is called M. Bison, the Spanish fighter is Vega, and the claw-wielding Spanish aristocrat is Balrog. For overseas releases, Capcom changed those names because “M. Bison” was considered too close to boxer Mike Tyson, and because the company wanted to reduce possible legal risk. The names were rotated: the boxer became Balrog, the claw fighter became Vega, and the dictator retained the name M. Bison. Japanese and international fans still sometimes use “Dictator,” “Boxer,” and “Claw” to avoid confusion.

Later games expanded Bison’s history. Street Fighter Alpha 3 presents Shadaloo at the height of its operations and identifies Bison as the creator of Psycho Drive, a machine designed to amplify and store Psycho Power. He seeks to transfer his consciousness into stronger bodies, treating his own physical form as replaceable. In the story’s climax, the Psycho Drive is destroyed, and Bison’s body is apparently eliminated, although his survival and return remain recurring elements of the series.

Bison is playable in Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, which was the first major revision to allow the four boss characters to be selected. He also appears in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter V, and other crossover titles. His signature techniques include the flying Psycho Crusher, the downward-kicking Head Press, and the follow-up Devil Reverse. These attacks give him unusual mobility and make him one of the series’ most recognizable charge-based fighters.

Although Bison is sometimes portrayed with comic-book extravagance, his role is tied closely to Street Fighter’s recurring themes of martial discipline, exploitation, and the corrupting pursuit of power. His conflict with Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, and other protagonists is not merely personal: Shadaloo’s crimes and experiments make him the central threat connecting many of their stories.
