*Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War* adapts the final major arc of Tite Kubo’s *Bleach* manga, which concluded in 2016. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the television series began airing in Japan in October 2022, more than a decade after the original *Bleach* anime ended in 2012. Rather than restart Ichigo Kurosaki’s story, it follows the substitute Soul Reaper into a conflict with the Wandenreich, a hidden Quincy empire led by Yhwach. Its title refers to a war rooted in the Soul Society’s violent history with the Quincies, whose power to destroy Hollows threatens the balance maintained by Soul Reapers.
The Wandenreich’s first assault on the Seireitei overturns familiar expectations. Its elite Sternritter can steal captains’ Bankai, leaving some of the Soul Society’s strongest fighters unable to use their signature abilities. Captain-Commander Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto confronts Yhwach and is killed, after which Shunsui Kyōraku takes command of the Gotei 13. Ichigo, meanwhile, cannot simply defeat the invaders by becoming stronger. His sword is broken, and learning how to restore it forces him to confront the identities and powers he has carried since childhood.
That investigation reveals the Quincy heritage of Ichigo’s mother, Masaki, and changes his understanding of Zangetsu. The figure he long treated as the spirit of his Soul Reaper sword represents his Quincy powers, while the Hollow within him is bound to the source of his Soul Reaper abilities. At the Soul King Palace, Ōetsu Nimaiya helps Ichigo forge new blades after Ichigo accepts both parts of himself. The revelation makes his family history central to the war: Yhwach’s campaign is not a threat newly arrived from outside Ichigo’s life.
The anime also gives consequential battles to characters whose paths diverge sharply from Ichigo’s. Kenpachi Zaraki trains by fighting Retsu Unohana, revealed to be the first Kenpachi. Rukia Kuchiki confronts Äs Nödt and unveils her Bankai, Hakka no Togame. Ichigo’s friend Uryū Ishida, himself a Quincy, joins Yhwach’s forces and is named his successor, creating a painful uncertainty about his loyalties. Released in successive parts beginning with *The Blood Warfare*, followed by *The Separation* and *The Conflict*, the adaptation has brought these long-awaited manga events to television while preserving their defining stakes: the fate of the Soul Society, the mystery of the Soul King, and Ichigo’s struggle to understand what he is.
