The Rehearsal

Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal is an HBO documentary-comedy series built around an extravagant premise: before confronting a difficult real-life conversation or decision, ordinary participants can rehearse it inside a meticulously engineered simulation. Fielder, who created, wrote, directed, and stars in the program, begins many scenarios by interviewing a participant about the stakes and then constructing sets, hiring actors, and scripting possible exchanges. The show’s methods deliberately complicate its apparent promise of control.

Season one premiered on HBO on July 15, 2022, and its opening episode follows Brooklyn resident Kor Skeete, who wants to confess to his trivia teammate, Tricia, that he has lied about having a master’s degree. To prepare him, Fielder recreates the bar where the confession might occur and rehearses branches of the encounter with an actor playing Tricia.

That small premise expands into a study of performance, deception, and the ethics of treating real people’s lives as producible narratives. The first season’s central storyline emerges from Angela, a woman seeking to rehearse motherhood before trying to raise a child. Fielder builds a rural Oregon house and arranges a rotating group of child actors, who age through the production schedule, allowing Angela to experience changing stages of parenting. Fielder joins the exercise as a father figure named Nathan, while the project produces tensions about belief, responsibility, and the artificial conditions imposed on everyone involved.

Rather than hiding its production machinery, The Rehearsal repeatedly reveals auditions, rehearsals for rehearsals, camera crews, and Fielder’s conversations with performers and participants. This self-reflexive structure is especially important in the season finale, “Pretend Daddy,” where Fielder revisits the parenting project and confronts what the experiment has demanded of its child actors and their families.

After the first season, HBO renewed the series for a second season. Season two premiered on April 20, 2025, returning Fielder to the idea that rehearsal can expose rather than solve uncertainty. Its opening episodes connect staged practice with Fielder’s investigation of commercial aviation safety. He examines cockpit communication, airline training, and the possibility that unspoken concerns can contribute to disasters.

The second season also makes Fielder himself a more explicit subject of the experiment. He rehearses dates and social interactions, using the show’s familiar apparatus of sets, actors, and repeated scenarios.
