Page Turner

Page Turner is a three-episode South Korean television drama broadcast by KBS2 in 2016. Written by Park Hye-ryun and directed by Lee Jae-hoon, it stars Kim So-hyun, Ji Soo, and Shin Jae-ha. The series centers on young musicians at an arts high school, using competitive piano performance and personal setbacks to explore ambition, parental pressure, friendship, and identity. Kim So-hyun plays Yoon Yoo-seul, a gifted teenage pianist known for her technical skill and competition results. Although Yoo-seul appears confident and exceptional, her life is tightly controlled by her mother, who treats her daughter’s musical success as a personal mission. Yoo-seul’s relationship with music is therefore complicated: piano is the field in which she excels, but it is also the source of constant pressure and isolation. Her life changes after an accident leaves her unable to see. The injury threatens not only her career as a pianist but also the version of herself that has been defined by being a prodigy. Rather than presenting recovery as simple or immediate, the drama follows Yoo-seul as she confronts frustration, dependence, and uncertainty about whether she can still perform. Ji Soo portrays Jung Cha-sik, a student whose original dream was football. After an injury ends his prospects in the sport, he turns toward piano despite having little formal background. Cha-sik’s impulsive personality and unconventional approach contrast sharply with Yoo-seul’s disciplined training. His growing connection with her becomes an important part of the story, particularly as he helps challenge her assumptions about talent, effort, and the reason she plays music. Shin Jae-ha plays Seo Jin-mok, Yoo-seul’s fellow piano student and rival. Jin-mok has long lived in Yoo-seul’s shadow, and his competitive resentment is shaped by his own desire for recognition. The drama does not reduce him to a simple antagonist; his frustration reflects the intense hierarchy and insecurity surrounding elite student performers. The title refers to the physical movement of turning pages of sheet music, but it also suits the drama’s focus on characters trying to move beyond fixed roles. Yoo-seul must reconsider a future built around external expectations, Cha-sik must find purpose after losing football, and Jin-mok must confront what rivalry has done to him. Page Turner is notable for bringing together Park Hye-ryun, whose work includes Dream High, I Can Hear Your Voice, Pinocchio, and While You Were Sleeping, with a compact format rather than a standard long-running drama. Its three episodes give the story a concentrated structure, culminating in the characters’ evolving relationship to performance and to their own ambitions.
