Farming Life in Another World

Farming Life in Another World is a 2023 Japanese television anime adaptation of Kinosuke Naito’s light-novel series Isekai Nonbiri Nōka. The story follows Hiraku Machio, a man who dies after a prolonged illness on Earth. A god apologizes for Hiraku’s difficult life and sends him to another world, allowing him to choose wishes. Hiraku asks for a healthy body, a peaceful life, and ability to farm. He receives the Almighty Farming Tool, an implement that can change form as needed and becomes practical foundation of his new settlement. Hiraku awakens in Great Forest of Death, a dangerous region that initially appears empty of human inhabitants. He clears land, finds water, plants crops, and gradually turns a solitary homestead into Big Tree Village. The series makes the village’s expansion central to its narrative: animals become companions, travelers become residents, and agricultural work leads to trade and diplomacy. Hiraku’s first major nonhuman resident is Ru, a vampire who arrives weakened and later becomes a key member of community. The cast also includes Tia, an angel, along with high elves, dwarves, beast people, dragons, and demons. Rather than framing Hiraku as an adventurer pursuing battles, the anime emphasizes consequences of his unusually powerful farm tool and social organization of village. His choices affect crop production, housing, brewing, defense, and relations with nearby powers. The Great Forest’s fearsome reputation contrasts with increasingly secure community Hiraku builds there. The anime was produced by Zero-G and aired for 12 episodes from January 6 to March 24, 2023. Ryōichi Kuraya directed the series, with Touko Machida handling series composition. Yoshiko Saitō designed the characters for animation, and Yasuharu Takanashi composed music. The Japanese broadcast included AT-X, Tokyo MX, and BS TV Tokyo. Sentai Filmworks licensed series for release outside Asia, while HIDIVE streamed it in selected territories. Before television adaptation, franchise had already developed through several formats. Naito began web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2016. Enterbrain later published light novels with illustrations by Yasumo. A manga adaptation illustrated by Yasuyuki Tsurugi began serialization in Kadokawa’s Monthly Dragon Age in 2017. The anime therefore adapts a story with an established print and web publication history, but its 12-episode run focuses on Hiraku’s arrival, village’s early growth, and its widening circle of inhabitants. Its premise treats cultivation as the engine of fantasy worldbuilding, while keeping Hiraku’s former illness crucial to the life he now values in his new world.
