Curb Your Enthusiasm

Curb Your Enthusiasm premiered on HBO in October 2000, expanding a one hour special called Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm. The series stars Larry David as a fictionalized version of himself, a successful television writer and producer whose social impatience repeatedly turns ordinary encounters into elaborate conflicts. David had previously co created Seinfeld with Jerry Seinfeld, but Curb uses a looser format: dialogue and story beats are largely improvised from outlines, although the situations are carefully constructed. The show's central comic engine is the mismatch between David's sense of fairness and the social rules everyone else implicitly expects him to follow.

The early seasons establish the show's Los Angeles world through relationships with Cheryl David, played by Cheryl Hines, his wife; Jeff Greene, played by Jeff Garlin, his manager and friend; and Susie Greene, played by Susie Essman, Jeff's wife. Richard Lewis appears as David's longtime friend, while Ted Danson, often playing an exaggerated version of himself, belongs to David's celebrity circle. In season four, David's feud with Susie Greene becomes a source of insults and profanity. The series also features celebrity guests whose fictionalized behavior heightens David's confusion. Its plots begin with grievances and accumulate through misunderstandings and retaliations.

One defining example is “The Contest,” the season three episode in which David tries to resist masturbation for a bet with friends, including Jerry Seinfeld. The episode became especially notable because it centers on a wager about sexual self control while presenting David's stubborn rationalizations as the comedy. Another major storyline follows David's attempt to open a coffee shop next to a competing business owned by a Holocaust survivor in season ten. The resulting “Seinfeld coffee” feud deliberately revisits themes and characters associated with David's series. Curb has also incorporated real events from David's life, including his divorce from Hines in 2020.

The show changed after Cheryl and Larry divorced in the story, allowing later seasons to explore remarriage, dating, wealth, business ventures, and public embarrassment. Season nine briefly moved David to New York while season ten returned him to Los Angeles and built its story around the coffee venture. In 2020, HBO announced a revival and the eleventh season premiered in October 2020, after a six year gap. Season eleven addressed pandemic disruptions through David's antagonism. The twelfth and final season premiered in February 2024, concluding the series with a return to the Seinfeld world and a callback to its finale.
