Altered Carbon is a Netflix science-fiction television series created by Laeta Kalogridis. It premiered on February 2, 2018, and adapts Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel of the same name. The story begins in a future where human consciousness can be stored digitally inside a device called a cortical stack, allowing a person to be downloaded into another body, known as a sleeve. This technology makes death reversible for wealthy clients but exposes identity, memory, and embodiment to legal and moral

questions. The central character is Takeshi Kovacs, an elite former Envoy soldier from the planet Harlan’s World. In the first season, Laurens Bancroft, a wealthy industrialist who has been restored after his apparent death, hires Kovacs to investigate his own

murder. Joel Kinnaman plays Kovacs in that season, while James Purefoy portrays Bancroft. The investigation moves through Bay City, a heavily stratified metropolis where police corruption, organized crime, sex work, and anti–stack political activism intersect. Kovacs also encounters the AI hotel Poe, a loyal and eccentric program named after Edgar Allan Poe. Poe’s establishment becomes Kovacs’s base and provides both comic relief and practical assistance. The season’s mystery centers on Bancroft’s missing memory of the night he was killed, while the case reveals conflicts involving Bancroft’s family, the police, and powerful

corporate interests. Alongside the murder plot, the series depicts people who can purchase repeated resleeving, while poorer citizens face shorter lives and economic pressure. Kovacs’s history is expanded through flashbacks, including his relationship with Quellcrist Falconer, a revolutionary

leader played by Renée Elise Goldsberry. Falconer’s ideas challenge the Protectorate, the interstellar political order that governs settled worlds. The first season also includes Kovacs’s sister Reileen Kawahara, portrayed by Dichen Lachman, whose connection to his

past drives the later revelations. The production was renewed for a second season, which premiered on February 27, 2020. Anthony Mackie then played Kovacs in a different sleeve, reflecting the show’s premise that a person can survive bodily replacement. Season two shifts

the setting to the colony world of Harlan’s World and follows Kovacs as he investigates an attack connected to Quellcrist Falconer. The cast includes Simone Missick as bounty hunter Trepp and Chris Conner returning as Poe. Netflix canceled the series

after its second season, and no third season was produced. The series remains notable for treating body swapping as both technological mechanism and profound social inequality and psychological displacement.
