Sissy Spacek

Sissy Spacek, born Mary Elizabeth Spacek on December 25, 1949, in Quitman, Texas, became one of American cinema’s most distinctive performers through roles that combine apparent fragility with unsettling resolve. She moved to New York as a teenager, initially pursuing music, and made an early screen appearance in Andy Warhol’s Trash (1970). Her breakthrough came as Holly Sargis in Terrence Malick’s Badlands (1973). Playing a small-town teenager who narrates her flight with a killer portrayed by Martin Sheen, Spacek gave Malick’s debut feature its eerily calm, storybook voice. She reunited with Malick in Days of Heaven (1978), playing Abby, a woman posing as Richard Gere’s sister during a wheat-harvest scheme.

Brian De Palma cast her as Carrie White in Carrie (1976), adapted from Stephen King’s first novel. Spacek’s portrayal of the abused, telekinetic high-school student earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and culminates in the film’s prom-night catastrophe. In Robert Altman’s 3 Women (1977), she played Pinky Rose opposite Shelley Duvall, another performance that earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Her preparation for Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) included singing Loretta Lynn’s songs herself; as Lynn, she traced the country star’s life from Kentucky marriage through professional success. The role won Spacek the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Spacek sustained an unusually wide-ranging film career after that victory. She starred with Jack Lemmon in Costa-Gavras’s Missing (1982), portraying Beth Horman, whose husband disappears amid Chile’s 1973 coup; the film received the Palme d’Or. Other major films include The River (1984), opposite Mel Gibson; Crimes of the Heart (1986), with Diane Keaton and Jessica Lange; and Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991), in which she played Liz Garrison. Her performance as Ruth Fowler, a grieving mother in Todd Field’s In the Bedroom (2001), brought a sixth Best Actress Oscar nomination. She also appeared as Mrs. Walters in The Help (2011).

On television, she portrayed Sally Rayburn, the matriarch whose family’s secrets drive Netflix’s Bloodline, from 2015 to 2017. In Hulu’s Castle Rock (2018), she played Ruth Deaver, a woman with dementia whose memories shape the season’s time shifts. Spacek married production designer and director Jack Fisk in 1974; they met while making Badlands. Their daughters are Schuyler Fisk, an actor and singer-songwriter, and Madison Fisk. Spacek’s memoir, My Extraordinary Ordinary Life, published in 2012, recounts her Texas childhood, her marriage, and the work behind her major performances over five acclaimed decades.
