Rosemarie DeWitt is an American actor whose screen work includes *Rachel Getting Married*, *United States of Tara*, *Mad Men*, and *La La Land*. One of her early film roles had an unusual family connection: in the 2005 boxing drama *Cinderella Man*, she played Sara Wilson, a neighbor of boxer James J. Braddock. DeWitt is Braddock’s granddaughter; Russell Crowe portrayed him in the film.
DeWitt appeared in the pilot of *Mad Men* as Midge Daniels, an artist involved with advertising executive Don Draper. She later returned to the series when Don encountered Midge again under very different circumstances. On the Fox drama *Standoff*, which ran from 2006 to 2007, she played FBI crisis negotiator Emily Lehman opposite Ron Livingston as her colleague and romantic partner, Matt Flannery. DeWitt and Livingston married in 2009.
Her performance as Rachel in Jonathan Demme’s 2008 film *Rachel Getting Married* brought her wider recognition. The story follows Rachel’s wedding as the return of her sister Kym, played by Anne Hathaway, exposes longstanding tensions within their family. Rather than serving simply as the bride at the center of the occasion, DeWitt’s Rachel has her own anger, expectations, and reasons for wanting the day to be hers. From 2009 to 2011, DeWitt played Charmaine Craine in *United States of Tara*. Charmaine is the sister of Tara, played by Toni Collette, whose dissociative identity disorder shapes the family’s life.
DeWitt’s later films include *Your Sister’s Sister*, in which she plays Hannah, the sister of Emily Blunt’s character; *Promised Land*, opposite Matt Damon; and the 2015 remake of *Poltergeist*, in which she and Sam Rockwell play parents confronting disturbing events in their new home. In the 2016 musical *La La Land*, she appears as Laura, the sister of Ryan Gosling’s character Sebastian.
Her television roles have continued across markedly different genres. In the *Black Mirror* episode “Arkangel,” she plays a mother who uses surveillance technology to monitor her daughter. In the 2020 miniseries *Little Fires Everywhere*, she plays Linda McCullough, whose effort to adopt a baby becomes part of a dispute over motherhood and identity. She portrayed Candace Zamperini, sister of the deceased Kathleen Peterson, in the 2022 miniseries *The Staircase*. More recently, she appeared as Hughie Campbell’s mother in the fourth season of *The Boys* and as the mother of a pop star in the 2024 horror film *Smile 2*.
