Ming-Na Wen

Ming-Na Wen was born on November 20, 1963, in Coloane, Macau, when Macau was under Portuguese administration. Her family moved first to Hong Kong and then to the United States, where she grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She studied theater at Carnegie Mellon University before transferring to New York University, graduating from its Tisch School of the Arts. Her breakthrough film role came in Wayne Wang's 1993 adaptation of Amy Tan's novel The Joy Luck Club. She played Jing-Mei "June" Woo, the daughter whose late mother Suyuan had founded a mah jongg group with three other Chinese immigrant women. The film connected four mother-daughter stories, and Wen's character narrates the search for her mother's hidden past in China. In 1995, she joined the television drama ER as Dr. Jing-Mei "Deb" Chen, a medical student who became a physician and remained associated with County General through recurring appearances until 2004. Her best-known voice performance began with Disney's Mulan in 1998, when she voiced Fa Mulan, a young woman who disguises herself as a soldier to take her father's place in the imperial army. Wen also supplied Mulan's speaking voice in Mulan II and later reprised the role for Disney television projects and theme-park appearances. In live-action television, she played Camile Wray on Stargate Universe from 2009 to 2011, serving as a civilian representative aboard the starship Destiny. She then became central to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., portraying Melinda May, a highly trained pilot and operative nicknamed "the Cavalry." The series premiered in 2013, and May's reserved professionalism gradually gave way to stories about trauma, loyalty, family, and the difference between a person's identity and the roles imposed on her. Wen appeared throughout the show's seven-season run, which concluded in 2020. Her Star Wars work includes voicing the bounty hunter Fennec Shand in Disney's acclaimed animated television series Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Fennec made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian, and Wen reprised the character in The Book of Boba Fett. That role made her part of a Star Wars storyline centered on Boba Fett's return to Tatooine and Fennec's partnership with him. Disney named Wen a Disney Legend in 2019, recognizing her contribution as Mulan and to the company's broader entertainment history. Across these projects, her work is unusually tied to specific characters: June's divided inheritance, Mulan's chosen duty, May's controlled strength, and Fennec's tactical survival on screen and beyond.
