James Gunn is an American filmmaker and comic-book writer whose career has moved between independent cinema, major superhero franchises, and studio leadership. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1966 and studied at Saint Louis University before earning a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University. Early in his career, he worked as a screenwriter for Troma Entertainment, the independent company known for low-budget exploitation films. Gunn wrote Tromeo and Juliet, released in 1996, a deliberately outrageous reworking of Shakespeare’s tragedy directed by Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman.

Gunn’s first feature as a director was Slither, a 2006 science-fiction horror film about an alien parasite that invades a small South Carolina town. The movie combined body horror, comedy, and affection for classic creature features. He followed it with Super, a 2010 dark comedy about an ordinary man, played by Rainn Wilson, who becomes a costumed vigilante. These films established his interest in outsiders, grotesque humor, and characters whose attempts to do good can be messy or extreme.

His broadest audience came through Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn wrote and directed the 2014 film, adapting a relatively unfamiliar Marvel team into a space adventure centered on Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. Its soundtrack, built around Quill’s collection of 1970s pop songs, became a conspicuous part of the film’s identity. Gunn also directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, released in 2017, and the 2023 third installment, which gave Rocket’s past a central role and concluded the trilogy’s main story. He wrote and directed The Suicide Squad (2021) for DC, a violent ensemble film featuring characters including Harley Quinn and Bloodsport, and created the related television series Peacemaker, starring John Cena.

Gunn’s work has not been confined to superheroes. He wrote the screenplay for the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, directed by Zack Snyder, and wrote and directed The Belko Experiment, a 2016 thriller about office workers forced into a deadly contest. He has also written comic books, including work for Marvel and Troma.

In 2022, DC Studios named Gunn co-chairman and co-CEO alongside producer Peter Safran. In that role, Gunn became responsible not only for directing but also for helping shape DC’s film and television plans. He wrote and directed Superman, released in 2025, beginning a new phase for the studio’s screen universe. Across these projects, his career has connected independent genre filmmaking with large-scale franchise storytelling.
