Bill Nighy is an English actor born on 12 December 1949 in Caterham, Surrey. Before becoming familiar to film audiences, he built a substantial stage career. He appeared in the original National Theatre production of Tom Stoppard’s *Arcadia* in 1993, playing the academic Bernard Nightingale, and originated the role of Tom Sergeant in David Hare’s *Skylight* in 1995. He returned to *Skylight* opposite Carey Mulligan in a revival that transferred to Broadway in 2015, earning him a Tony Award nomination.

A prominent television role came in the 1991 BBC drama *The Men’s Room*, in which he played Professor Mark Carleton. In the 2003 BBC political thriller *State of Play*, he portrayed newspaper editor Cameron Foster. He later played Lawrence, a civil servant drawn into international politics through a chance meeting, in the 2005 television film *The Girl in the Café*. That performance won him a Golden Globe.

Nighy reached a much wider cinema audience as Billy Mack in *Love Actually* (2003). His character, an ageing rock singer, records a Christmas version of “Love Is All Around” and bluntly admits that it is a cynical attempt at a hit. The performance won Nighy the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. The following year, he played Philip, Shaun’s stepfather, in the zombie comedy *Shaun of the Dead*.

His film roles have ranged from fantasy villains to understated family figures. He played the vampire elder Viktor in *Underworld* (2003) and its 2009 prequel, *Rise of the Lycans*. As Davy Jones in *Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest* (2006) and *At World’s End* (2007), he performed beneath an extensively computer-generated appearance. He portrayed Rufus Scrimgeour, the Minister for Magic, in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1* (2010).

In *The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel* (2011), Nighy played Douglas Ainslie, a British retiree adjusting to life in India. He was the time-travelling protagonist’s father in *About Time* (2013) and Mr Woodhouse in the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen’s *Emma*. He also played intelligence officer Johnny Worricker across three television films beginning with *Page Eight* in 2011.

One of his most acclaimed later performances came in *Living* (2022). Written by Kazuo Ishiguro and inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s *Ikiru*, the film casts Nighy as Mr Williams, a reserved London civil servant who reconsiders his life after receiving a terminal diagnosis. The role brought him his first Academy Award nomination, for Best Actor.
