Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield was born on August 20, 1983 in Los Angeles, California to British mother Lynn and American father Richard. He moved with his family to Epsom, Surrey at age three and attended Central School of Speech and Drama there. Garfield began his professional screen career in the Channel 4 drama Sugar Rush and appeared in the 2007 film Lions for Lambs. His breakthrough came as troubled teenager Jack Burridge in Boy A, earning the 2008 BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor. In David Fincher's 2010 The Social Network, he played Eduardo Saverin, Facebook cofounder and Mark Zuckerberg's estranged friend. The performance brought Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild nominations. Garfield succeeded Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. He reprised the role in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opposite Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. In 2021, he returned alongside Maguire and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which united three cinematic versions of Peter Parker on screen. On stage, Garfield won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for portraying Prior Walter in the 2018 Broadway revival of Tony Kushner's Angels in America. He had previously played Biff Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Mel Gibson's 2016 war film Hacksaw Ridge cast Garfield as Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist combat medic who refused to carry a weapon. His portrayal of the real Medal of Honor recipient earned Garfield his Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In Martin Scorsese's Silence, Garfield portrayed seventeenth-century Jesuit priest Sebastião Rodrigues, traveling to Japan to find his missing mentor. He later starred as Robin Cavendish in Breathe and as a troubled detective in David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silver Lake. Garfield's performance as composer Jonathan Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2021 film Tick, Tick... Boom! won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. He performed Larson's songs and received another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. For the 2022 Hulu miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, he played Mormon detective Jeb Pyre investigating a murder tied to religious extremism. The role earned him an Emmy nomination and continued his work in television after earlier British drama roles. Garfield returned to the London stage in 2022's The Eyes of Tammy Faye, playing televangelist Jim Bakker opposite Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker. He executive-produced the FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven based on Jon Krakauer's book.
