Oasis

Oasis formed in Manchester in 1991, emerging from the band Rain after Liam Gallagher joined. Liam’s older brother Noel Gallagher soon became the principal songwriter and lead guitarist, defining the group’s direction. The original lineup also included guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, bassist Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan, and drummer Tony McCarroll on drums.

Their debut single, “Supersonic,” appeared in 1994, followed by “Shakermaker” and “Live Forever,” whose optimistic, melodic defiance helped distinguish Oasis within Britpop. The album Definitely Maybe, released that August, became the fastest-selling debut album in Britain at the time. It immediately reached number one on the UK Albums Chart there.

Oasis became an act with (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? in 1995. “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” made Noel’s songwriting central to their popularity, while Liam sang “Wonderwall.” The album sold millions worldwide and spent ten weeks at number one in Britain, establishing Oasis among Britain’s biggest bands.

The band’s fame was accompanied by confrontation. Liam and Noel frequently argued in interviews and onstage, and their relationship became part of Oasis’s public identity. In 1996, Oasis played two concerts at Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire before roughly 250,000 people across the weekend. Millions more reportedly sought tickets for performances.

Their third album, Be Here Now, arrived in 1997 and set sales records in the United Kingdom. Its long, heavily layered production reflected the excesses associated with late-1990s Britpop, although later assessments were more mixed. Even so, songs such as “Stand by Me” and “All Around the World” became significant singles for the group.

After drummer Alan White replaced McCarroll, the lineup changed. Bonehead and Guigsy left during the recording of 2000’s Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, and Gem Archer joined as guitarist. Andy Bell later became the bassist. It produced “Go Let It Out,” but album marked a less dominant period.

Oasis regained momentum with Don’t Believe the Truth in 2005, featuring “Lyla” and “The Importance of Being Idle.” Noel, Liam, Gem Archer, and Andy Bell shared a stable creative period, while Zak Starkey played drums on recordings and tours. In 2008, Dig Out Your Soul followed with “The Shock of the Lightning.”

The Oasis album, Dig Out Your Soul, was released in October 2008. Tensions intensified during the year, and Noel Gallagher announced his departure after a backstage dispute at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris on 28 August 2009. Oasis disbanded, ending a run that had reshaped rock’s profile.
