“They Follow” is the announced sequel to David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 supernatural horror film “It Follows.” Mitchell is returning as writer and director, while Maika Monroe is set to reprise her role as Jay Height, the protagonist of the first movie. The sequel’s title directly extends the central idea established in “It Follows”: an apparently ordinary person is pursued by a relentless, shape-shifting entity after a curse is sexually transmitted.

“It Follows” premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival during Critics’ Week before receiving a wider theatrical release in 2015. The film became notable for its controlled visual style, electronic score by Disasterpeace, and unusually simple but disturbing premise. Monroe’s performance as Jay, a young Detroit woman trying to understand and survive the curse, helped make the film an important independent horror success. Mitchell’s follow-up therefore carries a specific creative connection rather than merely sharing a genre label: the original filmmaker, lead actor, supernatural mythology, and title concept are all returning.

The sequel was publicly announced in 2023, with Neon attached to distribute it. Julia Garner has also been announced as part of the cast. Mitchell and Monroe are joined behind the project by producers connected with the first film, including David Kaplan. The announcement confirmed the project’s existence and its principal creative team, but publicly available information has remained limited regarding its complete story, setting, supporting characters, and release date.

That lack of disclosure is significant because “It Follows” ended without providing a definitive explanation of the entity’s origin or a permanent solution to the curse. Jay and her friends attempted to redirect the threat by shooting at a swimming-pool apparition, but the final image suggested that the danger might still be approaching. “They Follow” can therefore continue the original film’s unresolved narrative, although no official synopsis has established exactly how its story begins or whose perspective it will use.

The sequel’s importance rests on the return of Mitchell’s distinctive horror framework. “It Follows” transformed an invisible social rule into a visible, inexorable pursuer, often placing the monster in the background of wide shots and ordinary suburban spaces. “They Follow” is confirmed as a continuation of that film, but details beyond its title, returning personnel, announced cast, and development history should not be treated as established facts until Neon or the filmmakers release further production information.
